Some sites have had a playthrough for the first part of the game for 30–45 mins.

Here's what they found:

Verge

"and to present your passport photo (a cleverly disguised character creator)"

"immediately managed to make myself a cheap fishing rod and bug-catching net"

https://www.theverge.com/2020/2/20/...new-horizons-nintendo-switch-preview-hands-on

GameSpot

"You can pick out your hairstyle and color, eye shape and color, nose and mouth types, and even cheek color before you begin"

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/animal-crossing-new-horizons-hands-on-from-nervous/1100-6473984/

IGN

"With the bulk of the customization done, Timmy and Tommy have one final question: what’s the one thing you’d bring with you to a deserted island? I was asked to choose between a sleeping bag, a lamp, some food, or something to kill time. I like wandering around at night so I chose the lamp. Timmy reassured me that Nook Inc. would provide all essentials despite my choice, and the Nintendo rep said my answer wouldn’t do anything directly but didn’t elaborate on the possibilities. With the profile complete, my character was taken to the deserted island."

"Tom Nook requested I gather sticks for a fire, and some peaches"

"But eventually, the day came to a close and when my character awoke New Horizons had synced to real-time (it runs on its own time for the first tutorial day)"

I think it's interesting that this game is coming with a built in tutorial. I didn't realize there were technically tutorial quests for New Leaf via Isabelle until I was reading the forums months after I got the game. It seems like an interesting idea to get you used to the new crafting mechanic though.

What I'm really interested in is the final question:

what?s the one thing you?d bring with you to a deserted island?

I know it was brushed off by the Nintendo rep as not being important, but that makes me feel like it influences something. They just didn't want to say what it might be.

i think it’s kinda cool that the tutorial isn’t synched to real time - will definitely help those who are able to get the game at midnight.

Thanks for the article links, OP. I read the Verge and IGN articles. Did not know about the GameSpot one. Will read now.

For those who haven't read them yet, I don't think the Verge article is worth reading. It's short and doesn't say much. I think the IGN one is interesting though.

I'm curious about that too! If they bother to put that in, it has to do SOMETHING.

No problem :)

I'm neutral with the tutorial being permanently day, I think a lot of people might be happy about that.
I like playing at night, and RS is open 24/7, which is great. I also can't wait to hear the night music, but I hope it's not as upbeat as all the rest of the songs in the trailer. I need me some 1AM/11PM from NL and 11PM/1AM/2AM/3AM from WW/CF.

What if this question helps to determine the personality types?

Maybe everyone has chosen the lamp so far and that's why we've only seen Jock and Uchi starters. The sleeping bag could be Smug and Snooty, the food Lazy and Peppy, and the "something to kill time" Normal and Cranky.

Also no more Rover. IGN pretty much confirmed he is not in the plane.

That's a good theory!

I have a really good feeling about it! I think it makes a lot of sense. Except I might switch one of my original pairing ideas...I don't think Normal and Cranky get along the best, so maybe it would be

Sleeping bag: Snooty and Cranky
Something to do: Normal and Smug

Great post, thank you for sharing!

No problem :)

That's a great theory with the choosing stuff.
I also forgot to mention Rover is still missing, I wonder if he'll come back at all.

I suppose it doesn't make sense for Rover to go on an aeroplane if said plane is going to a specific location, so maybe he'll do something else.

Interesting theory! I won't choose the lamp, curious to see what'll happen.. :)

It makes sense for the tutorial to be a little different since so many people have only gotten to know the franchise since Pocket Camp so this will make it a bit easier to help them set up their island. I remember being so confused at the start of WW.

To be honest, it feels a little handholdey to me. Of course, with a series like Animal Crossing, it is no way a deal breaker. Especially if it is done nicely. But, it still feels a little handholdey.

It does, yes. But consider the sheer amount of people for whom this will be the first mainline AC game. Plus it doesn't seem like it'll be long. I say maybe 15 mins max. And even those of us who've played for ages, they'll want to just make sure that we understand the whole crafting element (which we know from other games but probably Nintendo just being Nintendo).

I do understand where you are coming from. My first AC game was New Leaf and I really liked that it didn't try to force me through a tutorial. It just kinda left me on my own to figure things out after Nook set me up with my tent.

That being said, the tutorial for New Horizons sounds like it will be really cute and even though I'm not thrilled that it is there, I bet it will actually be fun to do.

I actually really like this. I won't get to play the game until at least 6:30 pm at the earliest launch day so having the beginning in daylight will be awesome.

Looks like we’re going back to working for Tom Nook when we first arrive, not unlike the pre-NL games. Neat!

I’d prefer the game to be synced up with the real time from the start, though.

Ah this will be great! I’ll be playing at midnight hopefully so it’ll make a nice change to start in the day!

Unrelated but I’m glad Nooks tent is open 24/7 to9, also good for midnight players
