Honestly I don't remember if I ever asked and it's been months... and the craving for that second island is hitting me hard.

If I were to buy a UK version of ACNH (my switch is US) would I be able to have a second Island? Someone told me this once, but I've never had it confirmed or not in terms of someone actually having done it.

Anyone know?

I've never tried it, so take my reply with a grain of salt, but I don't think it would work. New Horizons saves to the Switch itself, not to the cartridge (to put it simply), so I can't see any reason why a UK copy of the game would react differently. I don't know. It just doesn't seem plausible.

Sorry! I totally get that feeling. 😢 Have you tried maybe revisiting a previous game in the series? I've found that to be a good way to scratch that "new town" itch!

Yeah, I'm charging up my 3ds at the moment with the intent to possibly poke around my other town. I'm not gonna lie... I'm actively considering getting a switch lite just to have a southern hemisphere town that I can play on though. I absolutely hate that I can't buy a new game and play it though, wish they'd have like separate codes or something to allow it q.q I feel like nintendo is missing out on some money here lol pretty sure a good chunk of us always had multiple towns

I think they're making more money by having people buy a second Switch/Switch Lite, so even if they COULD change it, I don't think they WOULD change it.

It is annoying though, I agree! I used to have multiple New Leaf and Wild World towns. It's a little frustrating to have that creative itch in New Horizons and not be able to scratch it with a new town. (Probably better for my bank account though. I could always convince myself to buy another cartridge, but I can't muster up the willpower to buy another Switch. 😅)

Normally I'd agree about them making more money, but with the current state of the world and people struggling, I don't see how it's a big money maker for people to buy multiple switches! I could be wrong though. I hate the idea of shelling out 200 for a switch lite. 60 bucks for a game is bad enough, but 200+ for a whole new system is painful to think about.

But as it is, I need to buy an actual switch for my mother because SHE wants to play AC (she used to play City Folk ALL the time) now that she's seen me play. It's kind of re-sparked her interest, lol.

I think we had like, 2 copies of city folk. I had 2 of WW, like 3 for NL. Though I can only find one of them at the moment sadly.

EDIT: Gonna just go dream that maybe they'll add the option for a second town in multiple profiles as part of the update LOL

I mean honestly if you're paying for the family plan, I don't see why they wouldn't lol

ive seen people buying 4-5 switches for just themselves to have that many islands, nintendo is definitely making more money this way. also with how laggy the game can get with one island, i really dont think the switch could take two islands tbh

Ooof. This is a good point. I didn't even think of that - which is sad cause I commented earlier that my friend loads faster without an SSD in instances on WoW than my AC does sometimes lol

I think it’s ultimately a choice you have to examine and decide if is right for you. There’s not really a right or wrong if you feel it would make you happy, suit your needs, and financially you’re comfortable doing it.

I have two. Personally I’m happy with the choice not just specifically for animal crossing but to have a lite for while out/traveling since it’s more travel sized anyhow.

Out of curiosity, since you have two, do you have them set in different hemispheres? (sp x.x cause i cannot spell tonight to save my life)

I did not choose to do separate. I do think most people I know with multiple chose to do so.
I personally enjoy northern hemisphere. I wanted two different themed towns but still wanted to enjoy the seasons on northern setting in both. :) If that makes sense.

It does! I was just curious! I think if I do get a switch lite, I'd go for the whole opposite thing, but only for the difference in scenery when I play.

I'm seriously debating this second switch now.. Ugggghhhh. lol

Give it some time. Maybe make a list of pros for why you’d like one and cons for why it wouldn’t be ideal. Then go from there if one outweighs the other. :)

I think, player should have a choice, make decision if want to have one island or more of them. But I understand, Nintendo made this decision to make more money, there's no other story behind this.
As my household owns two Switches and two copies of ACNH I'm feeling quite comfortable, for example when I played a month and decided to start over, my valuable items had been transferred to my another-home-island. Having two consoles made me (us) to have all fruits in not time.
I really regret I was forced to buy online membership, as I'm playing only with one person and if local play would be working properly when I bought consoles and games, I would never be even thinking about online membership.
Local play (most probably has been quietly fixed), but whatever happens, after one year of online membership and if I will be still playing, I will never again buy any subscription from Nintendo.

In my opinion, sooner or later modders will find a way to release saves and will give players more freedom. As example I can use a fact, where save editor for New Leaf gives new features, like changing position of homes or literally every single item on the island. If it was possible in the past, will be probably possible in the future.

I believe you will need to have 2 different switch and play 1 game on each. For any reaso the game save to the switch it self and not the cartridge which is weird. I just got me another Nintendo so I could also play the 2 Islands.

You can't have two islands on one switch. I have two islands but only because I upgraded from a switch lite to a switch over the summer. The only way to get a second island is to get another switch or switch lite!

There are a lot more people willing to pay for a second copy of the game at $60, then there are people willing to pay $200-300 for a new switch. They're actually losing money on this.

I don't think they did this for the money. This is just a side-effect of having a shared island. Then again, maybe the shared island is something they did for the money. Saving the Island to the Switch rather than the SD was likely done to prevent duplicating save files.

It shouldn't be a secret that people willingly pay less than more, except those having too much money... but how many of them we know? ;-)
I could understand, it's not possible to save anything on cartridge, but console is have enough space (memory) to store any saves, multiple saves. Nintendo Switch as a hardware (excluding games) is just mediocre tablet, small one. Maybe at the very beginning they decided to lock save and tied it to a console, but as they observed how many copies of game players bought and how many consoles they sold, absolutely it's no reason to "unlock those saves".
Obviously I would prefer to have access to MY saves, to backup it on my external storage, on my computer or anywhere I want. I would prefer to have an access and to be able to make any decision how many saves I want and how often and for only my reasons to swap / replace those saves. But what I want and what is given there are two different things.

This is the thing Nintendo was trying to prevent in my opinion. Not only are you technically duplicating your Island with every backup you make, you are opening the door for unlimited item duplication. You give your friend 1m bells, restore the save, they give it back to you. You now have 2m bells. Repeat and you now have 4m, then 8m, then 16m, and so on. Imagine doing this with NMT.

Is there anyone you know who may already have a European or Japanese copy of the game, or anyone in the forums who does and would volunteer to try this? I've heard the same thing, that at least for some games, having a copy of the game from a different region creates another save file - there's a comment here that this works for Splatoon 2 - but I hadn't heard of anyone trying it out specifically for ACNH. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this is only for games where not all languages are supported depending on the region, which is the case for Splatoon 2 - the person in the comments on the post I linked mentions having a Japanese copy of Splatoon 2 and a "western" (I assume NA) one, and from what I found elsewhere, the Japanese copy of Splatoon 2 doesn't let you play in English. If I'm not mistaken, ACNH lets you choose any language option, regardless of your copy's region.

Basically, I'd try it out if you can borrow a copy from someone before buying it, but wouldn't want to go through the headache of importing it only for it not to work.

EDIT: Added the comment about ACNH's language options to clarify.

I understand your point. But without having an access to saves, many players cheating anyway, for example buying in-game-money or other things for real money. Whoever wants to cheat, will find a way, but who don't want to cheat, will not do this.
As I can observe, there are so many time travellers - and still, using same save. In my opinion Nintendo is aware of this, and existence of cheats should not be a punishment for every single player.
Anyway, if someone is cheating, it's not my problem - if someone is TTing it's not my problem either, as everyone has own style of playing.
I still believe only reason is money - more consoles and more copies of AC people will buy, Nintendo become more rich.
