Village Hunting Frustration

Is it just me, or is Cyd rarer than the other newcomers? It could be pure coincidence, but whenever I see someone struggle to get one of the non-amiibo villagers, it's always this guy! I've been after him for a while too (but I have no online account anymore, so I can't even trade for him) and out of all the newcomers, there are only two I haven't found: Raymond and Cyd. I've found all the elephants except him, and he can't be in my MIQ because I've gone through it all.

There are only about 5 villagers I want to find at this stage (Cyd included), so mystery islands are becoming more of a slog for me. The campsite keeps showing me villagers I've already seen in other mystery islands, so that's not working out well either.

With mystery islands, it probably is a coincidence, but generally speaking, 5 of the new villagers are very popular (Raymond, Judy, Sherb, Dom, Audie) so they show up quite a bit when people are giving away or selling their villagers.

Cyd, Megan, and Reneigh seem less frequent just by virtue of more players likely passing on them on mystery islands, and so there aren't as many of them floating around to be given away or show up in MIQ.

I found Cyd & Raymond twice. Invited both of them for friends who wanted them & for my personal quest of having all the non-amiibo villagers to pass through my island at least once.

Dom & Judy however, I didn't see them in all my hundreds & hundreds of hunts. Judy is the last one on my list & I'm now stocking up on my nmts for her lol.

Thank you for all the support & advice! I'm sorry so many of you have had similar experiences.

For the few villager hunts I did before this one I didn't search for one particular villager. I was looking for a personality type and those searches went rather quickly. I have all of the Amiibo cards so I could have moved someone in like that but wanted to try villager hunting. Since the 8 new villagers don't have Amiibo cards I felt like my only option to get an original Cyd was to villager hunt for him. I had been looking for ungifted original Cyds up for sale before I started my hunt and just wasn't finding many if any. I went into the hunt knowing he was more rare and it might take some time but I never thought it would take so long and be so frustrating. I am so thankful & grateful that @Sharksheep helped me get Cyd!

I really wish Nintendo would release Amiibo cards for these 8 new villagers and the 4 new NPS. It's been well over a year since ACNH released and so many people have had discouraging hunts like mine.

i have seen Cyd several times on mystery islands. he is not more rare, but I don’t want to seem insensitive to your frustration. The sense that he has to appear sooner or later can get so maddening if it seems like ‘later’ has come and gone several times already. He is more rare to see available for trade I think, just because he is less popular/ common. So that may also give the impression that he is less easy to find, because more people who want him have to resort to hunting him down themselves.

personally, I have come across all of them except Megan (who I would love to see, and maybe invite someday).

although this is 100% my superstition, it seems like the villagers you most want and put the most effort into searching for are inevitably the most elusive. So someone only looking for sherb probably finds c

As someone who villager hunts frequently, I feel your pain. It took me over 100 and something tickets to find my most recent dreamie to complete my list of dreamies for my current theme. This villager was Diana. I spent a couple of days searching for her with no luck. I had already previously heard about the move-in queue, and thought oh what the heck, I will give that a shot, just to make absolutely sure I didn't have her in there.

Turns out my move-in queue villagers were far from what I'm looking for (Coach and Boris *Shivers*). But once my move-in queue was completely empty, I felt better knowing that I wasn't wasting all these tickets looking for Diana. I found her eventually after spending close to 200 tickets, and it was the best feeling. I didn't want to have to resort to paying an ungodly price for her on Nookazon or something.

It took me a while to get through the villagers in my move-in queue, but I think it was worth it. After all the stress and pain Diana has put me through, I shall be keeping her for as long as possible, and I don't want to see another NMT for a long time.

island hopping is actually one of my favourite things to do, but i definitely agree with you that it can be frustrating as hell, especially when looking for a specific villager. i think the thing that frustrates me the most about it is how frequently you run into duplicate villagers - i can’t even begin to tell you how many sessions i’ve had where i’d only be like, 20 tickets in and would still be encountering the same villager more than twice.

but congrats on finally getting cyd! you definitely deserve him after all of that frustration lol. ❤

Oh wow, I've been villager hunting for so long and burned so many NMTs and only now have I heard of the MIQ. That's a really interesting mechanic, and definitely a frustrating one if your dreamie is unluckily one of the select few in your queue. I remember hunting Genji for so long in my old island that I've burned hundreds of tickets and still haven't seen him once. It might probably just be bad luck (considering I know someone who burned well over 1,100 NMT for Tangy) but yeah, now that I think about it, MIQs exist and maybe he was one of them.

I totally agree with setting the limit for using NMTs; I'd probably set mine at around 200 NMT before giving up to find the villager online. It's fun at first but it definitely becomes repetitive and tiring if you hunt for a few days. I'm glad my last hunt lasted only around 3 days (though I've played maybe 1-2 hours each day) and ~200 NMT before I found one of my dreamies, Pinky.

By the way, congrats on finally getting Cyd! You deserve him a lot. c:

I always find cyd on mystery island, everywhere i go, i see his face. XD. Not really interested with him so i keep letting him go.

I really enjoy hunting for villagers while island hopping, it's nice getting to see and interact briefly with villagers that I hadn't previously considered while looking for the ones I'd like on my island but it can get very frustrating when the same villagers turn up over and over again while others don't show up at all. I've been on many island hopping trips and every time I've seen Vic (usually multiple times too) which can be a pain as he's villager I have very little interest in and it feels like a waste of a NMT.
On the other hand it took 100s if NMTs before I ever found Molly and so far I've never found Portia or Freya in NH while island hopping, only recently found Vivian, all of which have been villagers that I've been looking for since I got the game. I eventually gave in and just got amiibo cards for them so that if they don't show up when I next island hop then I can just scan them in instead.

Villager hunting can be really fun or really frustrating. I have had fun when I don’t have a specific villager in mind. It gets frustrating when looking for one or two villagers.
