As we all know there are eight different personalities that our villagers can be. These being jock, smug, cranky, lazy, peppy, normal, snooty and uchi/sisterly.

I personally wish that there were more personalities such as Brainy or even Greedy. I feel that eight personalities just isn't enough and maybe adding one or two more would add some spice to the villagers because by now all the villager interactions seem a bit bland.

Anyway what are some villager personalities you would like to see in the game?

Shy personality is something I'd like to see and it'd be a "neutral" personality, where both male and female villagers could have it. I think it would be neat to have a villager that you'd have to befriend a bit better before they opened up and started to get more 'generic' dialogue. At first, they'd mostly partake in dismissive small talk in an attempt to end the conversation due to their shyness, but would open up if you talked to them more often.

Think Sable, basically. The foundation is basically there.

I would love to see a shy personality!

To be really honest, I'd just want the ACWW cranky and snooty personalities back (maybe even ACGC but I don't think that would sit well today). They are so different to the cranky and snooty ones today that they may as well be different personalities.

Since the existing personalities are all basically cartoonish character stereotypes, I think it would be cool to keep it going and add in a few more.

The first that comes to mind is a stereotypical egghead smart personality. Someone who can't go two words without mentioning equations, experiments, theories, etc. Maybe they come across as a bit antisocial and aloof to everyone else. Especially during holidays. Everyone's in a festive mood enjoying themselves while they're grumbling about how much work they could be getting done at home, but Isabelle insisted they join the rest of the town for once. Can't really see them getting along with any other personality besides their own. Maybe they'd clash with Lazy's laid-back, food-motivated personalities and be annoyed by Smug's know-nothing-know-it-allness. Their interests in bugs, fish, and flowers only go so far as research, so they'd probably ask you to bring stuff to them under that pretense. They'd also be the sort of blowhards who refer to themselves as 'intellectuals' and drop complicated or obscure words to impress others.

Another one would be like a cross between Peppy, Lazy, and Nice. The kind of folks that decorate their homes with 'healing' crystals and chart their luck by the tides of the sea and moon phases. They could be an excuse to bring star signs back to the game (IIRC, it was something villagers would talk about to you in past games, unless I'm confusing it with The Sims lol). Like a modern flower girl/guy. Lots of " I woke up feeling great! Mercury must be in gatorade." and giving you random gifts to balance their karma. I can't help but imagine the Japanese version of this personality coming out as someone who never outgrew their chunnibyou phase and still believes they have metaphysical powers. Their personalities would be mellow and personable, but you can't help but detect a sense of pretension from their so-called 'enlightenment'. They'd get along with almost everybody, except Crankies and Jocks, who have off-putting and stressful ~*~energies~*~.

Maybe a Shy personality. We get villagers who are all so full of confidence all the time (even the Normal villagers), it would be nice to have someone quieter and shyer to relate to.

I wouldn't mind an Eccentric personality either, someone with a tinfoil hat and thinks aliens are out to get him or something. lol That would be so much fun, the goofball of the island.

And of course, I wouldn't mind more negative personalities either, like Sulky or Moody. Cranky covers the anger side of things, but more villagers that are often blue like Eeyore would feel more realistic and relatable too.

Maybe some more straight-laced villagers too, like the Captain America type who would go around being helpful to everyone in the most serious way possible. Like, this villager would be a total boyscout/girlscout who takes things so seriously they would have a hard time getting along with Lazy villagers because they're so hardworking and diligent.

Spiritual villagers, maybe? I'm not sure religion would be a good idea to be brought into a kids' game, but you still could have spiritual villagers who act like they could detect some presence in the air or something like Katrina the fortune teller.

This idea just came to me:

Actual Superhero Personality: They'd really have superpowers, and they'd go around looking for wrongs to right and evildoers to smite, but there's no evil in Animal Crossing, so they wouldn't really do any hero work, when you're watching. But when you're gone and then talk to them later, they could talk about heroic things they did in other places while you were gone. They could also mention their superpowers and using them in humorous mundane ways. Or the problems they use their powers to solve for other villagers are really small, so their powers are overkill, with comedic results. ("The other day, Sherb asked me to help him open a jar of peanut butter. So I used my laser vision! ...and then I went and bought him a new jar of peanut butter to replace it after it exploded. Sometimes I don't know my own strength!") Could even be a gender-neutral personality.

Not sure how any of these would manifest in the game, but this is just a list of words I might use to describe people.

- Feisty/Bold?
- Wise?
- Dreamer?
- Argumentative?
- People Pleaser?
- Adventurous?
- Optimist?
- Pessimist?
- Emotional?
- Hot mess?
- Put together?
- Passionate? (Obsessed with one particular topic?)

- I liked the brainy/logical and artsy that were mentioned earlier.

In my opinion, personalities are one of the weakest areas of the game. Only 8 makes it seem flat, ESPECIALLY when you have some villagers repeating the same exact thing another just said.

I honestly think it'd be really cool if there were more personality types than the number of villagers allowed on your island. It would make your island so much more dynamic and would make visiting other islands feel way more interesting. I'd have more incentive to go to interact with villagers on other islands.

These sound more like individual traits than entire personalities. I wouldn't mind seeing them folded into existing personalities though, maybe with a sort of variation system. Like, Adventurous Jocks, Messy Peppy or Pessimist Smugs, etc. I'd probably have to be simplified down to certain modifiers having different dialog banks to pull from, but it could add a tiny bit more subtly to what's currently a pretty cardboard pool of personalities.

Perhaps. I was just throwing ideas off the top of my head. Going off what you said, I like the idea of maybe subcategories of the original personalities? To illustrate:

Normal 1: Dreamer
Normal 2: people pleaser

Cranky 1: Pessimist
Cranky 2: Argumentative

Peppy 1: Emotional
Peppy 2: Feisty

Jock 1: Adventurous
Jock 2: Optimist

If I'm understanding you correctly this is what you're trying to convey?

For me I think the go to's would be geeky and hippy. With the gender locking though I feel like Nintendo would consider both of those "male" personality types.

For female personality types I could see Nintendo getting behind shy maybe? Although I feel like NH normal villagers are basically already that.

I just wanna say I really like your perspectives. Especially the Eeyore perspective, it is kinda like the opposite of peppy and could go well as a clash. We could really use it. Not everyone is happy go lucky/all in, all the time, and it's ok not to be.
Also the spiritual I think would go well and ok if it was Harmonic. People do have some odd beliefs, practices, or rituals they do that aren't tied to a religion and are based on feelings so superstition could be a part of that. Not sure Nintendo would go for it. It may be one of those gray areas and offense could potentially happen by mistake. But I was thinking a good example would be a tingle in the knee about tomorrow's weather or predicting stuff through clouds just by looking at them, a feeling about a tree or flowers or the luck someone has. Following the cycles of various nature things like the moon, meteor showers, stars, seasons, weather. Having wind things that change direction with the wind.
Has a great interest in music. Really into candles and how a room is organized. Into herbs and spices since cooking is a thing now. Cares about the feeling of others or they harmony of the community. Having personal lucky items like a shirt or hat.

-------

I don't know if Nintendo will ever break away from personalities being linked with gender and I know we already have a nice number of 8 so I don't foresee them adding personalities.

Brotherly. Because of the gender thing and having sisterly.
Loners. Not everyone wants to mingle and are perfectly content by themselves. And not everyone who are loners are grouches or shy or depressed. They are just loners. This could clash with peppy and be besties with lazy.
Helpful. Some people just want to help, fix things, and just want be liked. Hates conflict. This could clash with cranky and be besties with normals or sisterly/brotherly.

I think having different subtypes of each personality is definitely the way to go. That way - not every villager's dialogue of the same personality type is the EXACT same. It would be nice to have diversity within personality types, so in cases when you have multiple villagers of the same personality type in your town, they wouldn't be exact carbon copies of one another. (which kinda ruins my immersion tbh) And another positive thing about it is that you wouldn't be able to have every subtype of every personality type in your town - due to the 10 villager limit. Which would in turn make visiting other people's towns more interesting so you can see and experience the other personality subtypes and dialogue.

Some ideas of subtypes... One half naming what I've kinda observed already being in the game, and a possible alternative subtype to that. It would be nice to have ATLEAST 2 subtypes of each personality type, but 3 or more subtypes would really diversify villagers and dialogue an exponential amount.

Peppy - popstar/idol
Peppy - manic pixie dream girl archetype (kinda crazy?), maybe impulsive?

Normal - smart/bookworm
Normal - Shy/sweet/maybe unsure of themselves/needing encouragement

Snooty - Regal/sophisticated/stuck up, acts like they're above you, bit prissy and scared of bugs and dislikes nature, can't stand gross/dirty things, is dramatic and thinks everyone adores them. when you get closer they try to be nice to you but just genuinely suck at being nice. tries to help you out/but accidentally comes off as insulting when doing so, but generally has good intentions behind everything they do once friends. (think maybe effie from hunger games?)
Snooty - fashionista, makeup/clothes orientated, dreams to be a fashion designer or model, a creative, bit nerdy about fashion, eccentric, and a go-getter (think labelle/label)

Uchi - Total tomboy/likes to rough house/bit of a prankster/jokester/messes around with you a bit, but in a friendly way
Uchi - Complete big sister vibes/ wants to protect you/sees you as family/pretty much looks out for everyone especially the shy normals and lazies/stands up for others, and calls out crankys/snooties types if they're being too harsh

Cranky - old man/ out of touch, cranky but sweet. dad/grandpa vibes
Cranky - Aloof, tsundere, maybe a bit of a mysterious bad boy?/ kinda shuts people out, takes awhile to get them to trust you and open up and finally reach their sweet side, appreciates your friendship so much once achieved, and maybe apologizes a lot for their past behavior? or just really appreciates that you put up with them being a jerk for so long

Lazy - Bugs/weird/semi gross
Lazy - Food/Sleepy/Cute

Jock - Super into being buff and swole, pretty much a gym bro, a little too into himself and his appearance, overly confident - but tbh doesn't live up to it lol
Jock - Promotes healthy active lifestyle, maybe slightly less obnoxiously, more into healthy food and nutrition side of things, wants to encourage you, big motivational speaker but in a good way, reliable, but still a bit of a bro

Smug - hipster/ appearances/wants to be cool and suave, massive flirt
Smug - kinda nerdy and pretentious - but mostly nerdy, gets a little too into their hobbies but in an endearing way/likes having intelligent conversations with you, and appreciates you for letting them to indulge in their nerdy side
