i never tried to when i was starting out with this game, but now i really regret letting some villagers leave without pushing to get their pictures 
it just feels special!
i also personally could never trade to try and collect pictures, i prefer having them given to me by my own residents, since again it just feels very special. no judgement or hate to people who like trading for them though! (that said i do wish they would only ever gift you their picture once bc i think i have like 3 spare pics of pekoe in my storage lol)
