I've seen villagers selling for really high amounts elsewhere and I'm interested in what people think about that.

I remember that in NL (and maybe before that) selling villagers in itself was controversial, with some people being against it. Personally, I think it's ok to sell villagers because they're fictional characters so I don't see it as an ethical issue, but it blows my mind that can cost so much. I prefer giving villagers away for free or for small favours (like cataloguing something) because I know getting them can be a real pain and it seems weird to attach so much value to characters you don't even want. I also hate the way the villager "economy" can make it harder to get less popular villagers. In NL there were so many villagers I wanted and took forever to get (or never did) because people just voided them automatically. :( It seems like in NH it might be the same unless you find people who have amiibo cards.

What are your own thoughts? What's the most you've ever paid for a villager?

I have never and will never buy a villager off from someone. I actually really look forward to going island-hopping every two weeks or so because it's such a different activity from my normal daily routine in the game -- I wake up super early to start island-hopping before work if it so happens to fall on a weekday. For me, part of the fun is in the decision-making process -- "I like this villager, but am I willing to take the gamble of possibly running into someone I think I will like more on the next island?" I swear I don't have a gambling addiction. XD

I never bought villagers but I have sold them. I just take the first offer. But I stopped selling them here because the response time is too slow and by the time someone is interested I have already voided them or sold them elsewhere. Now I only advertise on different discord servers.

I don't think it's weird to value characters you don't want since some people just want some extra nmts to find a new villager or get something in return for being available for pick up.

I had some people take forever to come to my island or don't respond and I'm wasting my time being available when I have irl stuff to do.

I haven’t sold a villager or bought. I have been kindly allowed to give a home to Megan and Dobie 💕 they are not going anywhere.

I love this forum as so many people just give out of kindness when they are able 😍

I have both bought and sold villagers. I think the most I paid was 20 NMTs + 1 mil bells? And that was for Audie. I don't agree with paying for such inflated prices like Raymond or Marshal where it was like 200+ NMTs. Especially because it encouraged people to buy NMTs through Ebay and such, which is definitely not fair or even allowed in terms of Nintendo. If I have ever sold a villager, I try to be as fair and reasonable as possible, or I just give them away/trade for them. At the end of the day, yeah they are not real, but I do get attached to them, so I would like for them to at least have nice homes!

I agree with you. As long as you’re not trying to get real money for the villager, I don’t have a problem with it. It’s your game and this is your tbt account, so if you have the funds or items that a person is asking for to buy the villager, I don’t see why you shouldn’t. It’s okay though to not like the idea of selling a villager; again, it’s your game and account, do what you feel is best just as long as you are respectful to those who may have a different opinion.

I can’t remember how much I got my villagers back in NL, but I know they weren’t anywhere near how much I spent on Raymond. The thread owner was selling an original raymond and said he’d like at least 30 nmts. I offered him 600 tbt 69 nmt and 3 million bells. The thread owner did not respond to anyone’s offers and closed it way later and finally posts he sold it. Thankfully by then, it was a week or two after I had bought Raymond from someone who must’ve been watching the thread and saw me post the second day the thread was up that my spot was going to be filled the next day. He accepted my original offer even though he probably could’ve gotten more from it; been staying in touch with them and trying to figure out ways to give back to them for that huge favor they did for me (even though I did pay that hefty sum) since they seemed pretty fond of their Raymond.

While part of me kinda wished I didn’t give up looking for him on NMTs so fast, the bigger part of me is happy since I believe I have made a new friend and it was a fun experience going to their town to meet him and the villager. :)

I've bought and sold some villagers...
Personally, I just like to let the seller slap a price on it, and if I think it's fair, I go for it. I sold Audie for 3mil and 5 nmt once when I KNOW she usually goes for 10x that amount lol.
It's all about value and worth... ya sell it to whoever's willing to pay the highest amount. And for some people, they'll pay millions for so-and-so....
I think it's ok to sell villagers. Maybe it's a little weird 'cuz if you think of them as your actual neighbors... well.... lol.

The most I've ever payed was maybe... 24 nmt? I bought Vivian with that (I offered 30 but I actually only had 24 0 v 0) I usually offer 1mil for villagers I really want.

I find that villagers don’t sell well anymore? The only one I’ve managed to sell is freya for 3mil. I used to sell villagers pretty easily for wayyy more in new leaf

In ACNL I got a few from people giving them away or selling at decent prices. But once I got the complete amiibo set, I no longer needed to. In NH, I dont buy them at all or even really use my amiibo cards. I wanna get all villagers in game. I reserve one slot for an amiibo villager but otherwise everyone else is a random move in or from the islands! I might resort to buying one in the future if I'm not able to find the non-amiibo characters that I want such as Dom

I've bought villagers in NL. The prices felt reasonable enough, especially because they got cheaper once amiibo came out. I always paid for them in TBT though, not in-game bells. So I didn't have to do the dropping millions of bells nonsense.

I haven't bought any in NH. No idea what the pricing is, other than hearing that Raymond is ridiculous. I would love to eventually get Raymond, but I now have the attitude that if I don't... well, I don't.

I think selling villagers is fine, there's nothing wrong with wanting to make a profit off of something that others want.

I start to judge quite a bit though when people let auctions and sales reach exorbitant prices. If I were selling a very popular villager, I'd honestly cap the highest bid at a certain amount or just post a flat price. I find it ridiculous to have others shell out hundreds of NMT and millions of bells for a digital animal with 1 of 8 different personalities lol. It also really leaves out those who are newer to the forum or to the game, and haven't acquired that much "wealth" yet--I think everyone deserves a chance at scoring their dreamies for a reasonable cost. I'm not saying you gotta offer your Raymond or Audie for free, but make it fair for everyone, y'know?

I think my original post was kind of misunderstood. I don't think there's anything wrong with selling villagers, I was just wondering about really high prices they can reach sometimes.

I've bought villagers myself but for really small amounts of TBT (for example) which I see as more of a tip to the other person for taking the time to help me out, especially since sometimes just voiding villagers can be easier than searching for someone to adopt them and because I've gotten them from cycling threads sometimes. I've also received villagers for free, liking unpopular villagers is nice sometimes!

200+ NMT is just ridiculous. I wonder how people who aren't in communities like this get so many NMTs without resorting to eBay. At least on here you can get TBT just by being active and use that to buy NMTs but 200+ is still a lot.

And same, I honestly just want my villagers to go to people who like them since it's better than just voiding them.

Based on these prices for Raymond, I'm so glad I don't like him all that much. 😱

It's a bit intimidating. I can understand why there are set prices to certain villagers and it makes sense but at the same time, it's overwhelming especially if that set price becomes the norm. If you glance at Nookazon, a lot of the prices are intense.

I never bought villagers nor sold them, although I may try later. It depends how lazy I am, lol.

I haven't bought or sold any villagers, the "economy" is completely ridiculous. I always give my villagers out for free, or a simple favor as you said. I want them to at least have a chance at getting a home even if they're not popular :( and for newer or just straight up less wealthy players is nearly impossible to get dreamies..

I normally wouldn’t pay the amount that I did for a villager, but since I had at least a lot of tbt (or for me it was a lot) at the time and didn’t want anything else, I thought, why not? Also, because he’s a cat and I love his design 😊.

When I decided I wanted to get him and saw his prices, I was a bit dismayed and at the time I wasn’t planning on buying him, though wasn’t having luck the few island hops i did and my first campsite visitor was a smug but not someone I wanted either.

I wouldn't ever buy a villager from here again, or anywhere else.

Amiibo is the way to go. :)

When I first started playing I wanted to first get all my dreamies before doing anything else. I will say I was a bit shocked from some of the prices I've seen for villagers, while others were more reasonable. I guess it's up to the seller to decide the price

This is ridiculous. I hate the villager economy, especially on Nookazon. People selling them with high prices like 1 mil+, 200 nmt and more. One, they're fictional characters. Two, there's no such thing as "rare villagers". Three, people like to make profit from selling fictional characters. It's okay I guess selling them for 10-30 nmt cause maybe the seller want go villager hunting. Not to mention that I don't like the nmt to igb conversion. All people have different opinions about that, some people sell them really high prices. Like what? I've seen people sell 50 nmt for hundreds of millions bells. But in here, it's okay I guess. I think 1 nmt = 12k bells. Don't ask why
