villager trading has to be a thing. it's such a big part of online gameplay imo, animal crossing without trading villagers would be sad

it is definitely going to make a return! although nintendo has made a lot of improvements to the handling of villager move ins, invitations, and seems to be rereleasing amiibo cards in certain regions, there are still hundreds of villagers in the game. for those who don't want to wait to get their favorite villagers they will seek out a means to have that happen faster.
the new villagers will also be high on many people's lists, so at the very least i forsee them being in very high demand. i also suspect that a year or more down the line we'll get a big welcome amiibo-esque update adding a lot of new villagers at once and that will also drive the villager "black market."
