Villagers & Custom Designs Questions

Does anyone know if villagers will wear all types of custom designs that you can display at the Able Sisters? I know they will wear the displayed hats (at least the beanies and the baseball caps), tanks, dress shirts, sweaters, and hoodies. But, will they eventually pick up and wear the coats and the different types of dresses and kimonos?

I haven't been able to find a solid answer to this, so I am hoping someone here will know for sure.

i have yet to have a villager wear any custom design in nh, i have not made any but they dont even wear the premade one

I’ve had them wear coats and balloon-hem dresses! I don’t have any of the other kind of dresses up, so I can’t comment there.

I've had 4 sweaters and 4 dresses up in my shop for months and the female villagers will wear the sweaters and the dresses, but the male villagers will only wear the sweaters, so it appears to be gender-locked to an extent. I think both genders can wear the coats/kimono based on others screenshots I have seen but I haven't tried for myself.

That's interesting! And also nice to know. I'm still getting used to some of my male villagers wearing accidental jumper dresses (like how the overalls turn into dresses), but some of them are just so cute in them that I don't mind too much.

New Horizons has really forced me to unpack some prejudices I didn't know had. But Sherb is still adorable in a little overall jumper dress.

I think it may depend on the template? I've not seen any data on this so I'm just going from my experience - I've circled the 3 I've used/displayed in my shop for months and my male villagers have never worn them (but all my female villagers have). I have seen some people use the coat template as a dress and the male villagers will wear that, but I haven't seen any screenshots of male villagers wearing a custom design from one of these circled templates.
