Villagers houses cooler than mine

I've noticed after the villagers upgraded from tents, their houses are way cooler than mine. Does anyone know if we will get to customize just more than just the roof color for our own houses? I'm jealous they get cool brick or metal exteriors and I'm stuck with this basic house. I can't find info on Google anywhere.

My assumption is yes, later on our houses should be more customizable. In New Leaf, it took a while to unlock different customizable options for your home.
