I am trying to plant weeds in various places on my island for visual effect. I really like the look of the full-grown weeds that have the little flowers. I was trying to have them sporadically spread out in small patches throughout my island.
However, weeds are very particular in this game. It seems that when you pick them and try to plant them, they restart as the smallest weeds and won’t grow on their own. Watering them doesn’t do anything. The game seems to know when weeds are actually wild or if they’ve been planted. Time traveling also doesn’t seem to help or change anything.
To get random weeds spread out on my island - am I going to have to erase all the patterns on the ground, let them grow naturally, and then take out the ones I don’t want later on? The older ones on my island that I didn’t take out are still full-grown. It seems like a big hassle to have to do this, but if I have to I will.
Any advice on the easiest way to get the weeds you want?

I think that you have to let them grow naturally to the stage that you want.

You may have hit the 150 limit on your island, and that's why they don't grow. You can "control" their growth stage by playing around with that limit (if you want all 150 on stage 3, pick all the new spawns so the others can grow, etc.)
