What are QR codes?

I just picked up my copy of animal crossing new leaf
yesterday and im still trying to learn everything i can about the game xD

but i was looking stuff up online and found something about QR codes
and they look really cool but i have no idea how to get them or use them
So if anyone can help me out i would really appreciate it! n.n

Go to the Able Sisters' shop and talk to Sable every day for I think 10 days and you can unlock the QR machine. Then you can scan QR codes to get patterns or make your own patterns into QR codes to share with others.

 

[Rose]

QR codes are used to let players share their designs with other users. If you befriend Sable by talking to her for ten days, she will let you use her QR code machine where you can scan codes and store their designs in a pattern slot.
