What Are You Listening To?

This is a song by Bob Welch’s short-lived group Head West BEFORE he joined Fleetwood Mac in 1971, and the only one on the album where he sings lead vocals. It’s unique, as it’s also the only song that sounds somewhat surreal; the rest are typical ‘70s sounding funk/soul songs. It’s definitely got some Future Games vibes to it.

The album itself is incredibly rare; it was only released in France in 1970, and wasn’t re-released anywhere else until the current decade. How did I find this album in the first place? Well, I got curious after reading the short bio on the back of the Future Games LP stating that Welch had previously been in several California R&B groups. Apparently a reason why this album was only released in France was due to Welch living there at the time, and was unknown to the general public before joining the Mac. He couldn’t get his music distributed by a bigger label until then (in this case, releasing Mac songs through Reprise Records).

It's also why he named his later short-lived band "Paris" after leaving Fleetwood Mac in 1975.
