Personally, I think that since there's no play coin feature on the Switch, you'll be using Nook Miles to get fortune cookies. Maybe they'll do something like in pocket camp where there are different kinds of them with exclusive furniture, and then there are the normal ones like from New Leaf? I really want to get some of the furniture from Pocket Camp's fortune cookies in NH, and this is the best way I can think of. I really don't want Pocket Camp furniture and outfits to be DLC, but that's just me. What are your thoughts on this?

Nook Miles will probably be a currency used for one of the rare furniture series/sets (new or old), or perhaps something that'll help determine what unlockable features you can get for your island. We'll have to wait and see.

I think I remember the game developers saying the Nook Miles are used to buy new recipes for crafting. Like Ossiran said too, it will be for unlocking rare furniture as well. I'm not sure if it will be used for anything else, but I do like your idea for the fortune cookies. :)

My guess, is they can be used for phone customizations, special furniture sets, special clothing, and considering they are called Nook MILES, my guess is they can be used for some sort of feature related to travelling. I honestly feel like we will be able to collect these Miles for the main purpose of travelling to other special locations in the game.

This probably won't be the case but would be interesting if Nintendo decided to put special items on sale for a limited time.

Whoever has completed a certain amount of Nook Miles during that time will be able to get them. Those who haven't, bad luck. :p Let's just say you may have a week to complete the required amount of Nook Miles. You could collect the item from either Tom Nook or Reese & Cyrus depending on what it is.

If they did implement this it would only be one idea of many I'd say, as it could be completely optional.

If the stores like Able Sisters and Shampoodle are on another island, maybe we could use Nook Miles to pay for a helicopter ride there and back. They could be like airline miles in the real world.

I wouldn't mind it if we would get some exclusive rewards, such as the fancy items from Pocket
Camp or completely new items. Special customization options for certain things in exchange for
Nook Miles could also work. I could also imagine that you unlock new things via NM, like new
items you can craft for example.

Hm, to be honest I wouldn't like it if you had to pay every time for going to another island. I mean,
the bus and train from the previous games where also free to use. Especially when you have to use
it often you would waste all your Nook Miles within a short time. Like if you have no NM left you
stuck on your island and be not able to buy stuff. Would be pretty annoying.

Maybe to earn them you have to visit other player's islands? I think that would be pretty neat. Also, from a business perspective, I can see them using something like that to get people to have to buy a Nintendo Online account.
