I know this will be a tough one because it is individual but what is considered acceptable and not acceptable?

Examples:
If a persons gate is open and you cannot get online to ask permission to go over, is it acceptable to just drop by?
I had Katie in my town today and couldn't get online to ask if anyone wanted her and just went to a town that had gates open and dropped her off. I did let them know I was there bringing Katie.
Personally I don't mind as long as the person tells me why they are there and if I am in the middle of a trade etc. they don't run off like a tornado destroying everything.
I generally don't mind people going off on their own as I usually have all my dailies done by the time I open my gates, and if for some reason I don't I will tell them, for example, that I haven't shopped yet etc. I don't even mind them buying everything up if I haven't shopped as long as if it is something I didn't have they let me catalog it.

I always ask before shopping or visiting villagers etc but for me I don't care if visitors do any of that...I just try to be cautious because I see so many have rules of no talking to their villagers or looking in their houses etc.
I can understand no taking hybrids, flowers or fruit without asking but I am confused on the not looking in their houses...you can't take anything! Talking to the villagers maybe I understand because they might leave, but that too you can prevent. (or maybe I am wrong on that, I see villager trading threads and don't understand how it works so someone would have to fill me in on that)

Anyway...sorry this is so long but I enjoy the game and it is just a game...nothing done cannot be fixed. Yes, it is hard work and it is frustrating to have inconsiderate people visit but I still maintain there isn't anything they can do that you cannot redo. Maybe I am just too lax. Or too old.

Would love to hear opinions on this.

If I see somebody's gates open, I am heading on over. Open Gate = Inviting people to come visit. Though, I have been mistaken for the person the host is trading with before. xP

To me, I don't care if people shop in my town as I do all my shopping early. If I was against it, I'd tell them not to.

I just don't like people shaking my fruit trees or taking my flowers. They can take regular trees, but I shake them everyday until I find the two furniture pieces so all that'll be left is money. :p Not looking at their houses seems so crazy except maybe it'd be hard for the host to find you if go into a house without them knowing?

yes, some might open their gates just for trades etc but you can close them after the person shows up...unless the person you aren't trading with shows up first...but in that case I would just let them know I am waiting on a trade. If people don't want the visitor they could ask them to leave or ask them to just stay put until the trade is done.
I have heard stories of people just taking off and ruining things but I think those are the exception, not the rule.

I really don't understand the not looking in your house rule but I respect it if that is what they want. If I go to a town that has rules where I can't do anything then I would just delete them from my list, what is the point otherwise?!

I don't understand the house thing either. Some people will show up randomly and wait for you to greet them at the gate. Others though don't seem to care. They run wherever the heck they want with complete disregard to me telling them to wait. I love the wifi switch...I feel this needs an evil laugh, so I will add one...Bwa ha ha ha haaaaaa!

I don't care about the looking in the house thing. I had 2 people do that yesterday without asking, but it doesn't matter. It's not like they can steal anything.

I've been having people come over lately. I have never once told anyone any rules. So far most people stay by the train station, and when they do wander off they ask. I only had 1 guy not ask, but he didn't do anything bad. To be honest, I don't really care if people take flowers (I have too many right now, and I'm not trying to go for hybrids yet) or fruits. I have some of every single fruit, including my native perfects, hidden away as a backup.

I just don't want them to cut down my trees or dig up my bushes. Those things are replaceable if they do, so I am not too worried. I just won't let that person who did it in my town again and will pass their names along to others as a warning. However, from all of the paranoia on these forums about strangers, people on these forums are generally extremely nice and try to follow courtesy when invited over. At least, from my experience. I've had about 15 strangers from these forums over to my town so far.

What is and isn't unacceptable changes from person to person. Personally, I hate it when people show up uninvited. Most of the time though I keep my gates closed though and only open them up for trades/close them right after the person that I'm trading with shows up. I also always tell people not to show up uninvited, but one girl did so anyway. Ended up deleting her as a friend for other reasons.

i feel like it truly should be acceptable. i mean. their gate is open.. if they don't want visitors, they should close their gate. and if they only want certain people in their town, they should close their gate after the visitors arrive.

if they have their gate open, for, say, a delivery or something, or it's something private and the 'uninvited' guest arrived sooner than the 'intended' guest, i don't see how hard it is to say 'sorry, i'm doing a trade, please stop by later' or something of the sorts. takes two seconds.

i don't see how 'popping-in' is considered rude. i honestly don't. if they trample your flowers, and run around and wander, simply disconnect, or end the party asap, and delete them. but most people i've met on Belltree have been INSANELY friendly, sweet, and kind. on another site for AC (i won't mention the website name), members were always extremely rude, snobby, and greedy. not to mention haughty.

i have no problem when people visit randomly. i love company, and i had my gate open for a friggin reason.

I agree with this and I have been lucky with the people I have had come over as well, so I really do think the good outweigh the bad!

Yeah, It is hard to know but if someone said hey I am waiting on someone please leave I would leave...I don't like just showing up but I wondered if it was acceptable. I had someone show up at my town once while I was waiting on someone to come over and I didn't mind but we were visiting to build up our visits to get the train station upgrade so we were ending as soon as the other party showed up. I did let my unannounced visitor know that and I didn't mind that he was there at all, but he caught me at a bad time...no big deal though.

totally agree!

if they need to do a trade or smth alone, once the person comes over you can talk to porter and he'll close the gate but everyone will stay

my sister told me this at least

I don't mind if people buy stuff from the stores, sell stuff, or go in houses. I have all my shopping done by the time I open the gates and they can't take anything from my house anyhow.

The only things I don't think are acceptable are running around, especially near my flowers (I have them laid out to try to get hybrids, which took a very long time). Stealing hybrids or excessive amounts of fruit I also don't think is acceptable. I have a lot of fruit trees which I planted partially for people to take some if they need it, but taking 10 bushels of fruit is way out of line.

If I just wanted specific people to come over and I had marked them as a best friend then I would choose the option to only allow best friends into my town when I was opening my town's gates. For me it cuts the list of people from 50+ to... two.

Though TBH I have not had a problem with anyone except for one person, but that issue ended up getting fixed.

The coming in without invitation is more just a small annoyance, but unless they're on my best friend list and can easily contact me I'm not going to get mad if someone comes unannounced or anything (well I probably wouldn't get mad regardless... but at least if they're on my best friend list it's easy for them to ask me if they can come).

Also just a note, I'm almost 100% sure you can't make a villager leave just by talking to them (unless they're already packed up, but then they're already going to leave anyway...). Villagers leaving seems totally random, contrary to what I thought before.

yeah I always thought villagers leaving was random...I have no idea about the trading villagers or how that works...I can only assume that maybe you talk to them a million times trying to convince them to move to your town? I like it being random. I am not opposed to trading but for now I will stick with randomness.

I don't have anyone on my best friend list but it would be great if I could message people through the ds because I cannot always get online, since I have to share a computer :/

What people do is they trade villagers by having the person come when that villager is packing up. Then when that person talks to them, they can convince them to move to their town (but only when packing).

just because i add someone as a friend on my 3ds, doesn't give them free range to come to my new leaf town any time my gates are open.
they should ask first. i would be freaked out if someone showed up uninvited and i would be annoyed if i was trying to do a trade with a different person at the same time.

I've never had to deal with anyone visiting without permission, but I can honestly say it depends on the person. If it's someone i'm close with who has been there before, I'll probably laugh and ask why they came. If I'm trying to have room for all 3 slots, i'll be angry that they took a slot for randomly showing up. If it's someone I only did a trade with once before or something. I will probably immediately kick them out for not explaining. They can explain later, I just won't have any of that stuff lyin' down.

The only thing that's annoyed me so far is people taking my perfect fruit without permission. Just because I have a lot, I'd be happy to give some to them but when they take advantage of it and take a million baskets that just pisses me off.

But luckily I've had pretty much very good experiences with people coming to my town. For the people saying they dislike when people show up uninvited, you do know you could just talk to Porter again and tell him to close the gates once your visitors arrived. Because you never know if the other person thinks you're inviting anyone to your town.

Personally, if I open the gate, people are free to come by without asking first. I like having people around and I eventually want to have a very scenic town so people can come by and enjoy the view, take pictures and whatnot. I also authorize any shopping on Main Street and selling at Re-Tail, talking to my villagers and exploring without me. As long as people don't run or pick flowers, they can do whatever they want. I actually have a habit of opening my gate and leaving my 3DS open on my bed even though I'm not there. I just hide my character behind a house or something and leave to do real life stuff.

However, I don't go to others' towns without asking. I also don't leave the train station area unless I'm given permission, always walk on pathways if there are any, never run, never take anything, never talk to anyone or shop unless the host specifically tells me I can do those things. I'm very shy and insecure so I don't want to annoy or anger anyone by doing something they wouldn't like. I also love seeing people's houses but I never enter unless the host is showing me around. I also get very nervous if the host tells me I can explore and they'll just follow me because then I don't know where I can go and if they'll get tired of me just standing around in pretty places enjoying the view.

I used to not mind people over, but now my inventory's always full and I have a bunch of stuff on the ground I only open gate for trades.
I'm okay if the person coming over says hi first, then tell me what they're here for.
If the visitor just ignores me and runs off into town/main street...well...I just flick the wifi-button :I it's faster. I mean WHY would you go into someone's town and not even say hi?! that's just rude!
I usually ask when I'm in someone's town.
I'm starting to really hate opening for trades though, since there was quite a few times where the other person was really slow and I had unwanted visitors. I have started to keep my friend list to only those I've talked to instead of just everyone to make it more pleasant for me.

I think I wouldn't mind at all if people come after I finish decorating my town..it's just a mess right now. As long as they greet and ask for permission. and don't take or destroy anything.

the only reason I showed up uninvited was because I couldn't get on here to ask them first and sometimes it shows people on here as online when they aren't and/or they don't get their pm's right away etc.

I always stay right at the train station unless given permission to wander and I do not run or take anything without permission first. But I am sure there are a few that take advantage. Some don't mind and others do. Really hard to know when you are in a time crunch and cannot get online what to do. Luckily the town I went to they didn't mind but, if it weren't for needing to drop Katie off I would not have just shown up there.

To be honest, I've been thinking about that a lot (if it's rude to randomly pop in when someone's gate is open). I feel like imposing somehow. When I'm in someone's town, I always try to be respectful. I usually don't even run if the other other person is running, because I don't know where their flowers are and I don't want to trample anything.

I've actually never had any negative reactions when talking to other villagers. I guess you can still prevent them from moving away ( getting them to move can be a bit harder ^^; ).

I don't think I've had any rude visitors to my town, though. A couple awkward ones, but never rude lol.
