As I try to build up my army of friends who play,
Because of a lack of friends and family who actually do.
I was asked a vary similar question last night.
What is animal crossing?
What is the premise of the game?

I find it hard to answer sometimes, besides that game I been waiting for years to play.
It's about you living in a town making money friends and living day to day in real time?
It's the game I love and if you play you'll love too.
It's hard to describe.
So here it is to you,
Your task is to sale me this game..

What is animal crossing?
What's the premise of the game?
Why should I play?

"What is Animal Crossing?"
Animal Crossing is a Life Simulation game at it's core. The player should not expect to go on an epic quest to save the world, fight enemies, or build up an army to rise against an evil empire or monstrous invasion. It's a relaxing game for those who want to try a game that's different than any other game in their library. I doubt they've ever played a game that evolves at the same pace as the day itself!

"What is the premise of the game?"
(Now this one depends on the game, what with the 3DS version looming on the horizon. I'll write from the point of view of other games, for simplicity's sake.)
You're a human who's just moved out of your parents' home and have moved to a new town (which you name yourself) via train/taxi/bus. You soon find yourself in a village of anthropomorphic animals! Here you are soon greeted by the town's only general store owner: Tom Nook. You need a place to live and he's the one who'll help you out! After you've settled in your house he'll ask you for your payment... something you can't pay! Instead of throwing you back into the ride you came in on, Nook offers you a job to help pay off your debts. Though the job does not pay off the entire sum, he allows you to continue paying the house off at your own pace.

"Why should I play?"
You'll find all sorts of things to do in your town. You can dig up fossils, fish, catch bugs, and even garden. If you like interior design, you have a whole house to fill up with furniture ranging from the master sword to the moon itself! The wallpaper and carpet are customizable as well. Are you into fashion? You can collect many different types of clothing and even create you own designs at the Able Sisters' shop. If music's your thing, every Saturday you'll meet a guitar playing canine who's more than willing to give you free copies of his famous music! You'll be able to befriend and hang around with the many colorful villagers you'll meet as you play the game, so you'll never be alone.
There are many events and holidays in your little town, and they occur on different days of the year and at different times just like in real life! Fishing Tourneys, Fireworks, Christmas, Halloween, and New Years are only some of the holidays you'll celebrate with your new found friends.

What is Animal Crossing?
It's a game all about relaxing. How you play the game is completely up to you. You can go fishing, bug catching, or even pay off/ decorate your house. It may not be full of action and adventure, but it's filled with something more. It's a kind of magic. You are exempted from the struggles of daily life and are allowed to relax in your own quiet paradise among friends and animals.

What is the premise of the game?
You are a kid who moved out of their parents house and into a small village that is populated by anthropomorphic animals. When you get there, you are given a job which will act as a tutorial as you get used to playing the game. After the tutorial, you are pretty much set free. Some people consider beating the game as paying off your house, while others try to complete collections. There isn't really a right way to play the game though. It conforms to many different playing styles from hardcore gamers, to casual ones.

Why should I play?
Because it has a certain magic. It isn't really something that I can explain without you playing it, but something about it brings a smile to your face when you turn it on. It sort of brings you back to childhood in a sense, even if you didn't play the game as a kid because it captures that time in your life when there weren't any responsibilities. You could go play with your friends, or go fishing, or just create mischief, and no one would stop you.
Not only that, but the game moves with you day by day. It doesn't get boring because the seasons are so versatile and bring constant changes. Nothing about it ever becomes stagnant because there is always something to do. Plus, it's a game that gets even more fun when there are people to share it with.
