Basically it's just watching threads without posting or anything.

A guest who's always on the boards can be consider a lurker because they don't post and instead lurk or "hide".

Some people are also using lurking as a term for people watching cycling villager threads.

If you're wondering about that "lurking" term, you basically are watching a cycling thread and waiting for that town to have your favorite villager to move in. I'm not 100% sure, but if you lurk for a villager, you aren't guaranteed said villager, but you get notified if that villager ever shows up.
