What is tbt and how do you get it? I see everyone buying villagers and items with it but nobody says what it is.

TBT is the number of "Bells" you have on this forum. You can see how much TBT each person has displayed under the avatar on their forum posts. For example, I have around 600 TBT/forum-bells.

You can get TBT is many ways. Posting in certain forums can give you TBT (depending on how long your post is) or voting on polls. You also get 700 TBT for being a new member if you're active for the next while.

People also occasionally call it "BTB" which stands for "Bell Tree Bells" so there's less confusion.

They also call Animal Crossing bells "IGB" (in-game bells)

Tbt is the bell tree but people say tbt as the forum bells which makes no sense. Btb (bell tree bells ) makes more sense, but try telling people that.

I agree with you on this one. Everytime I read tbt or btb i read them as the full words so if someone says something like "I will sell this for tbt" I just read it as "I will sell this for the bell tree" and it kinda annoys me becauase it makes no sense like you said. But hey, it's not doing any harm so I don't usually complain about it.
