I definitely agree that more aquatic/island dwelling animals would be likely! Though I would LOOOVE bats <3
I hope they do not add more villagers. There are more than 450 villagers as it is.
Game making is all about managing ressources and I'd rather Nintendo spends the talent of its artists and creators refining several aspects of the villagers :
- Adding more animations for villagers, so they interact with the player and the environment in more ways. We can see villagers sitting on the ground or carrying sticks in the trailer, but they could do even more, they could interact with fountains, try to catch bugs (not just wander around with the net) or swim.
- Make villagers more unique: add more personnalities, which also means adding more lines of text
- Have a more complex system of relationship, something convenient (it doesn't need to be in your face like in The Sims). For example, the ones you spend more time with or help out more will be more keen to interact with you than the ones you ignore.
Adding more villagers would probably mean more hollow shells of characters. Nintendo now needs to deepen the villagers instead of multiplying them.
I do wonder how non-armed villagers would work. I've seen people suggest snakes in the past. How can you give them an item? Fish and sharks might work though, if they make the arms look like their fins.
I want to see fox villagers. Redd shouldn't be the only fox in Animal Crossing.
