Animal Crossing New Leaf is the first of the series I've really gotten in to. I read a few things on here about the older games that made me curious about other changes that people have noticed that's been made over time.

1. Resetti used to absolutely terrorize children when they quit without saving, he's toned down a lot and even made optional in New Leaf

2. Snooty villagers used to be a lot more rude, but were made more nice

what else has happened? Satisfy my curiosity.

I know they added the Uchi personality in New leaf, which is one of my favorite personalities! Plus a few interesting new villagers were added.

Cranky villagers were sO MEAN in the first game. I remember them always making me feel bad about not getting on for one day. They're tone was just so so soooo rude and they acted like they hated everything. But luckily snooty and cranky villagers were fixed in the later entries. Or else they might just upset kids like how resetti did.

I legit had a nightmare about resetti when i was a kid.It scared me so much I didn't play the game for a week.

1.)The animals had more personality I guess, all of these villagers are way too nice. They never get mad at you for anything, even when you smack em with nets they're kind of nonchalant about it. Many people see this as a positive, but I never feel punished for treating the animals so terribly or not doing their chores. In the gamecube game they'd guilt trip you, get pissed off, or just be downright depressed if you refused their requests.

2.) point/devil hats are gone. I was happy when i first heard about this but now I miss them.

3.)KK Slider was a bum/traveling musician guy who would give out his music for free. It's kinda sad how he's a professional musician in new leaf because in the older games he was really against putting a price on his songs. I guess he realized he can't make a living off of giving free shows so he became a sellout.

3.) When you gave villagers furniture whether it be in letters or in person, they'd never put it in their homes. But they would wear shirts you gave them. Umbrellas too I think.

4.) Holidays and festivals were a little hard to participate in.
-In the groundhog day even you literally had to wait HOURS or maybe minutes until resetti showed up. Thats the entire event.

-With christmas you had to have been in the town for 5 or 3 months, and have successfully done aLL of their chores. Then you have to look for jingle. Back then the town had this weird grid format so if you found jingle in one square but went to another for some reason then came back again, he'd be gone. It was ridiculous.

-Then there was the harvest Festival. Nothing really wrong with this event except on how disturbing it is. Theres this turkey who would be invited to thanksgiving dinner thinking he would join in the meal. But the whole reason they invited him over was to eat him. If that weren't disturbing enough, THERE ARE BIRDS WAITING TO EAT HIM TOO. Thats some messed up stuff.

-Sports fair was just 2 hours of watching animals do sports. Which sounds cute but it gets boring really fast.

5.) Animals were able to use the bulletin board to make their own scavenger hunts. They'd have some rare stuff hidden too so that was awesome.

so ye im sure theres more but heres all that i can think of.

Thinking back to gamecube
I feel like there was way more variation in the characters' dialogue and a lot more swapping of furniture and stuff (they also used to never go near your clothes)

I remember I used to always try to get Olivia's happiness up in the night and hold onto full pockets of furniture I did not want and then if I was lucky she would do this swap thing where we would swap furniture back and forth as many times as I wanted... I got so much good furniture that way!

Not to mention getting furniture was extremely hard.... and villagers never changed their house

You couldn't pick what villagers came to your town at all

a town was split between 2 levels and the beach was only at the southend of town, if you got lucky you could randomly get islands/ split rivers in your town and even more rare was having a 3 leveled town

panning between "Acres" and the acre system in general....

you could have 16 villagers to make a full town (they seriously need to bring this back) DLC maybe? hahaha

like above said, the holiday/events were kinda weird and not very interactive... lol at sports fairs... most were so early in the morning too I was never awake to see it

but I love New leaf, it has made the game more personable and memorable, like you get to be more apart of the other villagers' lives, its really cool and I don't even look back at the old games

there was no online in the gamecube version, so to visit towns a friend would put their memory card in slot B. also theres no way to interact with other players characters.

theres the viking/dunce hat that changed with your clothes

tom nook had a lottery at the end of each month where you could get cool stuff.

obviously theyve added villagers/fish/bugs/furniture/etc.

holiday events were kind of bland; basically just talk to tortimer and get your gift.

in the gamecube games, there was a journal you could write in.

in the summer there was an aerobics thing copper did where you could make yuor character exercise and you could get a speacial radio to exercise in your home too.

overall i like the changes that have been made, but there are some things taken out that need put back in (like the journals)

Acnl in my opinion has the worst music.
The older games were far simplier which made the game a bit more enjoyable.
Acnl is pretty hard to set down after a few minutes, unlike the old games.
The villagers used to be unique and fun with far better phrases and sentences.
you used to be able to donate bells to recieve things which was cool.
Acorn festival.
Meaner Resetti.
Houses used to have beds on the top floor in some games where you could customize your bed and lay down instead of pressing start if you wanted to.

I played the GC Animal Crossing the most out of the older games, so what comes to mind is from that.
It did feel a bit more laid-back, because there wasn't so much you could do everyday. Overall, it felt like it had a slower and more relaxing pace. Because it wasn't internet-capable, there was never a worry about what will happen when the servers go down one day. I still pick it up now and then.
And there were e-reader cards! The Amiibo cards for HHD remind me of them. I only own a few...I'd love to be able to get my hands on some of the ones I couldn't get. Except for the pattern cards (which could be recreated), I don't think any had exclusive content, which honestly makes them better than the Amiibo cards in my opinion, but that's a digression.

Totally agree haha!

Crankies were jerks in the GC version! Now I LOVE crankies in New Leaf so much I have 4 LOL

I remember in wild world, I never spoke to Dr. Shrunk. He would walk around your town and when I spoke to him he would try to teach me an emotion, but I could never figure out what he wanted me to do. I was stuck talking to him until I figured out how to learn the emote. It always ended with me getting ticked off and hitting the power button. I tried playing again a few months ago, and he was walking around. I knew I shouldn't talk to him, but I did. I still couldn't figure it out, and I had to hit that power button.lol.

The scorpions and tarantulas seemed a lot scarier to me. I swear they were faster and made more noise.

It was really easy to accidentally erase a part of your path, and every time I went in my house, I would accidently pick up a piece of furniture. I would put it back, then do it again, and again. I'm so glad they fixed that in New Leaf. It was quite frustrating.

Resetti was mean, but the worse part is he would have you type something, and if you typed it wrong, he would make you do it again and again. I swear I typed it right, but he was never happy. My niece was only 6, and she was always quitting without saving. I would have to deal with Resetti so she could play.

The tent and igloo games were a huge gamble. I learned to never go in with a ton of bells on me. Those campers could take everything you had in the blink of an eye.

Fossils would spawn on the sandy beach.

If you fell in a pitfall, your character died and you had to start the entire game over. Lol. Just kidding.

Oh geez, I am trying to remember...

The Original

In the original, Resetti was an absolute terror. You did NOT time travel or shut off your game if you did not want to be yelled at by a digital mole for ten minutes, that is not even an exaggeration.

Speaking of time travel, I never did it unless it was to play when the shops were open (since I usually played at night in real time), but if you did it a lot, it would really mess up the game apparently.

The golden axe was really hard to get, I think that's what you got once you had a perfect town for a while. Speaking of the golden axe, you could use that on the rocks instead of the shovel!

Being mean to the villagers would sometimes actually get them to leave. Never Scoot though, I used to hit him with the net all the time. Also you could have way more villagers in your town.

Cranky and Snooty villagers were absolute jerks but sooooooo funny. I am sad reading all these posts about how they're nicer! Wolfgang needs to be a complete jackass.

Also LOL @mitzelflx K.K. DID become a sellout, he was a total bum for a while up until NL.

The villagers were so mean, that even the normal ones could make you feel like crap sometimes.

There were more weeds. In New Leaf, when your town got overrun by weeds, it's not that many at all. The GC version could take HOURS to pull all those weeds. It's terrifying.

Every time you walked to the end of an acre, the screen would shift and your character will be on the other side of a new acre (it's hard to explain, maybe just watch a video)

Wild World was... kinda the worst in my opinion. It also had my least favorite music. (I like City Folk more than Wild World because those awful graphics had been updated to Wii quality, but they still are lackluster compared to New Leaf which has beautiful graphics.)

The Gamecube version was really great, and also really simple because one shirt item pretty much served as your entire outfit. I like the simplicity in a way.

There was one spot that spawned every day where you could dig up a thousand bells or more. If you buried the bells in the special spot while it was still glowing, you could grow a bell tree, given that it was a good planting spot :)

Resetti probably made many kids cry. Lemme tell you, The original Animal Crossing was one mean game >:[

Like a few others have mentioned, the villagers had more personality. They weren't afraid of insulting you to your face or hurting your feelings. Now they're so bland they have barely any personality. Back in Wild World, Pate once told me she hoped my house burned down because I missed coming over to her house. They would never say anything like that now, which kind of makes me sad. I actually liked how they used to be jerks, because it would make me laugh sometimes and over time you could warm up to them.

I personally don't think mean=more personality but whatever you prefer

I personally like how they became nicer, the game feels like my happy place now where I'm always accepted... I don't like being reminded of mean people in my life D:

Like, I like how the crankies still get annoyed, but not necessarily from your character constantly talking to them

I mean more personality in the sense that it made them stand out from the others. For example, you could tell what personality type a villager was based on how they treated you. Normals were always the easiest to befriend, because they were always so nice. Crankies and snooties were, well, cranky and snooty. It took a lot to get them to open up to you, and when you were able to it was sort of like an achievement and they turned out to be very nice. I'm bad at explaining things, but basically I liked how I had to learn their trust. It gave me a small goal to work towards, where now there really isn't that goal anymore. None of the villagers are very challenging to befriend. They are 'watered down' personality wise. I really feel like the developers took out the things that made each personality great, especially when it comes to snooties and crankies. The other personalities are okay, but these are really lacking. Sometimes I just wish they could be a little more snooty and cranky. They don't have to be vicious or anything, but a little snide remark here and there is what makes them...them. Without that, they don't have much personality to me.

I see now.
Well, I do like the niceness, but I'm also incredibly surprised that Curt has never insulted me and Naomi is not exactly... snide.

In fact, I even find myself waiting for just a little bit of rudeness for them! (it never happens though, but in a way, I really love it.)

I see what you mean though.

But the GameCube versions of them were soooo rude, especially the snooties. The crankies always made me laugh with their constant grumpiness, but the snooties said some nasty things that made me upset and really kind of angry. Yeah, I'm sensitive like that. It doesn't help that the snooties remind me of actual people in my life I want to keep avoiding.

I've only ever played Wild World before this. I've noticed tiny changes, like you can no longer fish under your bridge (there's a sort of invisible barrier surrounding the underside of bridges now), and you have to drag items all the way to their slots, when transferring mail or things to your closet. It used to be that you could drag it to a corner and then it would automatically slide into the first slot available. Wild World would also let you reel in fish by tapping the screen, which I thought was handy. So I only miss small time savers, I guess :D

I'm happy the villagers aren't mean anymore, and want to interact with you as much as you like. I played Wild World on my old DS which couldn't connect to the internet due to having become incompatible with my router settings because it was such an old device, and after speaking to them a couple of times, villagers would say something along the lines of 'you're nice and all but I just really want to talk to someone else, for once' and I'd get hurt :'D I couldn't even fulfil their request, I just had to hear that complaint day after day. I also think Wild World wouldn't let you stop villagers from moving out, sometimes they just had their heart set on it and would leave no matter what. That made me sad, too. All in all, I think New Leaf is a much friendlier version of the game, and it's more relaxing and more a safe space because of it.
