I realize I'm probably missing the meme train (like I almost always do), but where did these two memes come from? I just ask because a lot of people choose them as their names when I play Town of Salem and while I've been looking it up some, I don't really know a whole lot of details. Also, what is your general opinion of that meme?

As far as I know, it's not a meme really. Just a little keyboard face that's easy to make, like <(?▪?<) or (=^•^=)

Cause people like keyboard faces I guess.

Like Stella-Io said, they are emoji faces. I actually used them pretty heavily from like 2012-2013, but around 2014 or 2015 they started to be mocked and described as cringe culture. I think it didn’t help that people were becoming familiar with it from this one NSFW copypasta, which I think is what really made the meme take off.

Aw owls. I can kinda see that. Esp if they do ?v? hoot

I don't think they we meant to be owls, just a 'cute' thing, like any random typed out face thing. Kinda like what Wildtown has on their selling roses and candy thread, just meant to be a cutesy face.

it's kinda just like 'xD' something cute to add to your sentences but not necessarily an emoticon or a meme

You can always just assume something came from tumblr if you can't pin back something's origin date.

It was very popular on a website I used to go on a lot between 2009 and 2012. It's a text emoji. Was never quite sure what it meant, but it's supposed to be cute...

wasn't it used by furries roleplaying or something? that's what my friends told me.

nah, it's just a little cute face; i use them because they remind of a cat and owl. I also use "OvO" though!

haha, no.

ok but did anyone else use owo ewe uwu etc like wayyy too much in like 2011-2012......... like i actually used uwu and owo without being a furry before they were memes but i had to stop when it became the symbol of cringe they are today. i feel like so many other smileys were forgotten though, like ?w? and '-' are classics and o_O is peak raNdOmnEsS

tbh I use owo and uwu sometimes, but not a lot depending on the situation. And I am a weeb. A JoJo weeb. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and its memes are the holy grail and "owo" is often used with Kakyoin lol

Because the lowercase w can look like a kitty face, I think that it's fair to guess that furries have used these emojis at time (in a handful of semi-iconic instances, too), but it's generic enough that anyone aiming for a certain kind of cutesy can have some fun with it. ^w^

They came from the past lands of Lorule. OWO (light) and UWU (dark) are the two necessary inscriptions needed to cross between the light and dark worlds without fading from existence.
