Personally, I liked Dragon Ball up until after the Cell saga. Once the Buu saga came along the story and quality started going down, in my opinion. I didn't like what they did with Gohan and they pretty much gave him a back seat in the series following, along with Krillen, Piccolo, Yamcha and you might as well throw in Vegeta, too.

I hated the Saiyaman idea or showing him go to school, it was like watching a cheesy sitcom from the 80s/90s. I gave up on him after that and I feel bad everytime I see him on screen now. I still try to watch the rest of it (save for GT, which I found myself skipping a lot of episodes for and some of Super).

I just don't care that much for the series anymore. I tried watching the Tournament of Power and it was awful. I was kinda hoping for something unexpected to happen, like another universe winning, Jiren winning or maybe Gohan or Piccolo to be the victor. The winner was unexpected all right...but the bad kind of unexpected.

Ultra instinct seemed like a cheap plot device. There were moments were Goku supposedly had no more energy left to battle after already using ultra instinct in battle and then *poof* ultra instinct again.

I liked Jiren's design and the idea that he wasn't another over glorified Saiyan, but...he was such a generic cookie cutter antagonist and he didn't need a tragic backstory to add to it. I wish they'd done more with him, but oh well, not my story. :(

I like reading what others think about Dragon Ball whether they liked it/still like it, what they like about it, ect. So does anyone else still keep up with this series?

I added Super twice. >_> I don't think you can edit polls once you've submitted them. :( :( :(

Yeah, I would agree that Dragon Ball Z is where the series was at its height. Dragon Ball Super had a lot of problems, some of which you’ve mentioned and others of which I would rather not divulge into right now. Dragon Ball GT was a horrendous saga of the series and deserves to be burned in a pit of fire for all eternity, imo. I mean, Dragon Ball Super was pretty bad, but if we’re putting them on a scale, Dragon Ball GT was definitely worse. There were just so many episodes that were confusing or you had no idea what’s going on, even if you had watched the episodes prior to it. Can’t say much for original Dragon Ball because I haven’t watched it (I know I need to at some point, but it’s way back on my anime backlog as of now). Haven’t watched TeamFourStar’s parody of it, but I’m sure it could be at least somewhat enjoyable.

Also, yes.

XD Yeah. I thought even Super was better (except the tournament of power, sorry I can't like that part of super). The intro music for GT (the Japanese version) was really good though. I love the music a lot and it makes me feel nostalgic whenever I listen to it, even though I hardly watced GT.

I would have to say that my favorite part of the Dragon Ball series would be the original Dragon Ball. I like that it's a bit more grounded than everything that came afterward. Fun humor, more interesting fights, and the supporting characters got way more to do. Heck, one of my favorite characters in the series, Tenshinhan/Tien, got to
defeat Goku in the World Martial Arts Tournament.
Just an overall solid series, I'd say.

Dragon Ball Z/Kai is great as well, but not as nice as a full series. It's nice that it continues after Dragon Ball left off and I tend to recommend if anyone hasn't watched the original Dragon Ball, they should do so before watching Z/Kai since you'll appreciate the early arcs of Z/Kai way more. The start of Z up through the end of the Cell saga are fine, but as much as I can appreciate aspects of it, the Buu saga seems mostly less interesting and more unnecessary. Not to say that the Buu saga is wholly worthless, but that moment after Gohan finally defeated Cell seemed squandered by everything that came afterward.

Dragon Ball Super is itself a step down from Z/Kai in my opinion. There are some cool and/or entertaining moments bogged down by a whole lot of boring. I skipped large swathes of it, like the arcs that were just adapting the movies and that one section where some villain of the week made a purple goo clone of Vegeta. I did like some of the Zamasu section, it was fun to have Android 17 back, and Beerus and Whis are fun, but if the Super series never happened I would be fine with that too.

GT is the worst of the bunch. I watched it all when I was a kid just because it was on tv and a continuation of a thing I liked, but even back then I knew it was of lesser quality than the two series that preceded it. Wholly unnecessary corporate moneygrab with limited involvement from Akira Toriyama, the entire contents of which have no bearing on Super whatsoever, so it's more like a weird fever dream than something that actually happened, and yet it exists. Not to mention Uub's potential being squandered like Gohan's was in Z, and the fact that Pan never even went basic Super Saiyan. I generally dislike continuations, remakes, or anything of that sort being done to pre-established stories that don't involve the original creative mind(s) behind the story in the first place, and that definitely applies here.

Finally, I don't count it among the others since it's not part of the actual series, but since it's in the poll, I do enjoy TeamFourStar's Dragon Ball Abridged series.

I've never read the manga, so this is all just going off of the anime adaptations.

I have never been a fan of Dragon Ball myself. When I was in high school, my boyfriend was a huge fan so I saw a lot of episodes of Dragon Ball Z just from hanging out with him, but I felt like the story never went anywhere. There was too much filler where they were just powering up. I could skip watching for an entire week, come back, and Goku and Frieza would still be standing in the same spots, staring at each other and powering up. It just couldn't hold my interest because of this.

I've heard people say that the original Dragon Ball was better, but I've never gotten around to checking it out.

I did get a good laugh out of Team Four Star's abridged version, though, so I voted for that. It helped that I did know the characters and some of the storylines. My husband and I still quote some of those lines when we're joking around.

You worded this way better than I ever could.

Yeah, it did have a lot of filler and I can see it being frustrating, especially if you're viewing it from a TV channel that airs it once a week and sometimes repeats episodes. I'm glad I got to watch it from DVD and didn't have to wait a whole week just to watch one episode and hope they didn't cancel it or restart from episode one again.

I love Team Four Stars version, too. Whenever I need a good laugh, I like watching their dubs. :p

I liked the original Dragon Ball, as well. I felt characters were more balanced and there was more suspense. Also, it's more focused on comedy than its successors. I don't know which one I prefer if it came down to Z vs the original, though. Probably Z, since I watched that one first.

The original by far. It was a fun adventure type series. Anything after that I just outright dislike.

Z it just became a stupid escalation of arbitrary numbers. All the characters are kind of the same. Rather than characters actually growing and actually learning new things it was just "my number is higher than your number!" followed by "well I've been training so now my number is higher, and I've got yellow hair now to prove that". Nobody really learned or did anything significantly better, just a change in appearance and the characters telling you something has changed to give a false sense of progression and simulate raising the stakes.

It's at a point where all the characters feel pretty much the same outside of appearance/personality (even then, there's not a whole lot of variation in personality with Z). All barrage attacks, a laser beam and if they're lucky 1 unique move (that's usually just another laser beam).

It's the polar opposite to something like Jojo or One Piece where all the characters have a unique [mostly] static ability that they use in various ways to overcome various different opponents. There's no obligatory training to pretend things have changed, no "my number is higher therefore I win", just "how will this character and ability beat that different one?".

For me probably DBZ since that is what I watched as a kid back in the 90s and 2000s. They first aired the original DB through the beginning of the Pilaf saga and heavily edited back in 95. I think later on in the early 2000s they aired DB on toonami with more sagas in English. I feel GT was a hit and miss. The Baby saga was my favorite from that.

Super I feel is also a hit and miss. the beginning was pretty boring stuff and I felt it got better over time. The Goku black saga was pretty good until they rushed the end. its okay. I do prefer the DBZ animation and fight scenes overall

You make a good point here. One Piece has its flaws too, but I find it more enjoyable to watch than anything after the Buu saga, at least. I might be biased towards Z, since I watched it first before I gave Dragon Ball a go, I liked the way they built up the first Super Saiyan transformation and I really liked the character development Gohan had until they trashed him. Piccolo was sadly given a back seat as well, since saiyans became the main focus of the series, so I can definitely see why fans of the older series would hate Z. After Super Saiyan 1, I feel it did become more of a transformation competition rather than who can use their abilities with more resourcefulness and ultra instinct just furthers this idea.

You make a good point here. One Piece has its flaws too,

One I think One Piece shares largely since the time skip is haki and Gear forms to lazily up the steaks similarly to power levels and transformations (though gear forms existed before then, they just weren't as drastic). You know as soon as the idea of gear third is mentioned that transformations are a thing (I don't feel it was clear with gear second as he didn't really transform, it was more akin to Gai Ken) and that now Luffy will periodically gain a new form to win whatever battle he is in.

Whilst I think it brings the same problem to the table DBZ has, I think there's two major differences in the presentation;
1) There's a lot more of a visual difference to Luffy's transformations (...well, with gear fourth) which at the very least gets me wondering "what will it look like?" rather than "what colour is his hair this time?". I still think SS3 and SS4 are at least visually appealing solely because it looks like more effort went into the design than a lot of everything else in the series (was going to name something more specific, but there's so much stuff in Dragonball/Akira Toriyama's art that looks near identical to something else he's already done)
2) It still plays off of Luffy's main gimmick of being rubber but generally doing something more 'specific' with the idea of stretching, bouncing, inflating etc. Super Saiyan forms, as I keep saying like a broken record, just tell you they're faster and more powerful whilst really nothing has changed.

I think one of the more obvious flaws for both series that I mentioned are plot armour and convenience. Sometimes the author can't just kill a character (...yet) but it's also a battle the character can't reasonably win. They may die at some point anyway, but they can't yet for plot reasons...But at least in this case something unexpected and interesting happens to make them win, something different and unexpected, even if it's quite obviously pulled out of their butt.

Again, this is a detriment in DBZ since it's never a case of it being a battle they just can't win, it's a case of going away for a bit to train, saying their power level is higher and continuing to use the exact same abilities they were 2 episodes ago but somehow better (we're told) because they're stronger now (we're told)...And now Goku is blue. The result is just battles that are visually identical with all the steaks coming from characters telling us there are some.

Death and the undefinitive nature of it is another thing that takes steaks away from DBZ, notably after the Frieza saga with Goku miraculously escaping. A character dies and more than likely they'll just go and get the Dragon Balls to bring them back or something, or maybe they won't because nobody really likes that character so they don't do it because 'reasons'. Or "I'm going to die, better eat this last sensu bean I've literally not mentioned I have until now...Which because I'm Goku will also raise my power level", or "I'm just going to stop being dead, but first I'll need to train and raise my power level". The planet has literally blown up but thank god there was an escape pod. "Will Goku survive!?!?!", of course he will, it's only the side characters we all hate who might actually die.

Again using Jojo as an example (it's by far not a perfect series itself, but I've mentioned it so it's on my mind), a character death has significance because there's a very good likelihood it's definitive. A couple characters had fake outs but otherwise when a character dies they're gone, it holds weight, they're not just going to collect the McGuffin's and bring them back and nothing really exists in the universe that can do so or if it does then it has major drawbacks (vampirism). Even main characters have died or failed to defeat the main villain.

I go on about the fights partially because it's a Shonen (so it's a big part) but also because I don't generally dislike the story in DBZ, so it's a shame I find it so unwatchable since there's some good stuff in there, I just can't sit through so much 'blegh' to get to it.

I liked the way they built up the first Super Saiyan transformation

This especially I thought was very well done despite how I've gone on about hating the structure of 'power levels' and transformations. It was talked about pretty much from the start of Z so you knew it was a thing but had enough misinformation given that it was also a surprise when it happened. It was essentially regarded as a myth. Especially when he eventually does transform there's a lot more to it than just 'shout really loud and do the power up stance'..Then it just kinda became a thing where you knew a new transformation was going to come along with every series.

Another positive I would give (since I do have some positives despite my dislike for the series) are the initial versions of Cell and Buu. Ultimately Freiza in his ultimate form became Goku with an alternate skin.
- Cell started out as a bug thing, then into a humanoid that 'ate' people. That was a cool unique ability that (if you forgot about the fact every important character in DBZ is immune to permanently dying) made him more frightening in that he could easily get rid of a few main characters...Before he got his perfect form and became as generic as the rest of the cast.
- Buu, a fat guy that can turn you to chocolate. He's also friends with the stupid fighting guy that thinks he's awesome when he's not. THAT'S fun and at the very least unique. Even with Kid Buu it's unique enough, but ultimately it does devolve into the same old tropes as everything else which is a shame.

I've seen up to the Buu Saga (everybody watched and loved DBZ in the 90's, it's only when I've gone back to watch it years later I thought "wow, this isn't good") and narratively there's nothing really wrong with it, but fights are 90% of it and they're just so visually and narratively uninteresting and repetitive to watch after you've seen the small amount of things the characters do and have realised the repetitive cycle each saga goes through.

Meanwhile, OG Dragonball is over there having a fun little adventure, meeting weird people, collecting these weird little balls, Goku learning new abilities and taking part in the obligatory shonen tournament where one guys """ability""" is that he smells really bad.

Yeah, it's even worse now that Super Dragon Balls are a thing and have no drawbacks this time. There's no weight to a character's death if you know they'll come back anyway through popular demand. And whenever they kill off all humans or lifeforms on the planet, you already know they're going to bring them back once the arc has concluded. That's one aspect of any show I'm usually not a fan of. I've seen too many cases of characters being brought back to life through some magical mumbo jumbo or plot contrivance and in some cases even tears might be enough revive a character, need I mention Pikachu's tears curing the petrify status?

Meanwhile, OG Dragonball is over there having a fun little adventure, meeting weird people, collecting these weird little balls, Goku learning new abilities and taking part in the obligatory shonen tournament where one guys """ability""" is that he smells really bad.

I like dragon ball too for the humor. I can definitely go back to it countless of times and always get a good laugh from it. :)

I'd say DBZ just because quality Piccolo content lol, and I thought it was overall more enjoyable. I liked Dragon Ball but I got super tired of the perv humour. A lot of the characters in Super pissed me off and I never watched GT
