Which Splatoon has the best story in your opinion? The first or the second one? I never played the first Splatoon game since I didn't had a Wii U and only know it from Let's Plays. I liked it, the best part for me was the final boss with the music of the Squid Sisters playing the background. The story of Splatoon 2 was also kinda cool, I enjoyed it.

(Note: This is about the main story of each game. Not counting Octo Expansion)

I'd say Splatoon 2. It's not just "omg the zapfish yikes", Marie genuinely gets worried about Callie and it shows a lot of character on her part. While Splatoon 1 just has you tearing apart an innocent society because some kooky old man told you to, you're actually saving someone in the second... and it also shows that Marie isn't a huge pile of salt that only exists to make people miserable. I also love the friendship between Marie and Sheldon and I really like the DJ Octavio fight.

I think Splatoon 2 had a slightly better story. Though honestly, as much as I like Splatoon, neither of their stories are particularly memorable. It is clear they were focusing more on gameplay, which I don't consider to be a bad thing. After all, your game should be enjoyable to play before anything else.

honestly for me are both good
both have their bad and their good

in a way i feel like the bosses on the 2 felt much better than the first and combine a lot of stuff
but just felt like some of the level brought it down and did not enjoy it

while on the first i did enjoy the levels but not much on the bosses except sector 4 of the first game (my favorite boss of all time)
but that just me

i will never say one better than the other since they both had their bad and good for me

so both are great story :D and love them

....octo expansion will be my favorite though lol

For the base games I would neither is particularly fantastic, but I'll go with Splatoon 2. I would otherwise say that the Octo Expansion has the best story out of the 3 of them by a wide margin.

Splatoon 1 I can't really remember much about aside from the last level, which says enough about how memorable it is. Splatoon 2 had a bit more going on, not to mention it's a lot more recent thus I remember it better, but even then the most memorable part was still the pretty similar ending. The single player was fun to play, but in terms of writing and how it was all presented both games very much felt like "here are some levels and some sort of plot, because the game needs some kind of single player mode I guess".

The Octo Expansion managed to do a lot more, maybe due to it being a single player expansion.

For starters, it managed to give a lot more personality to Marina and Pearl over the course of a single expansion than Splatoon 1+2 managed to give Callie & Marie over 2 games. I straight up hated Marina and Pearl before playing it, now I prefer them, largely down to it just feels like there's more going on with them thanks to the expansion.

We got a lot more of a look in at the Octarians/the subways, which isn't necessarily better than the squids BUT it was just a really big and interesting change in terms of aesthetics and 'lore'. All the deep sea creatures, the 80's neon aesthetic in contrast to the squids 90's aesthetic, the dark 'bred for war' feeling the Octarians had.

It also felt like the story missions connected more to what was happening in the plot. Again, the first 2 games felt like I was more doing levels because that's what you do in a video game. It still felt like that with Octo but to a much lesser degree, especially when it moved away from the subway and we actually started making progress towards the surface.

Again, the ending was the most memorable part BUT it felt like it was more significant and had a bigger payoff that the rest of the game had better built up to rather than being the ONLY memorable part of the game. As I've said a few times, Splatoon 1+2 kind of just felt like the game said "go and do this, because video game" whereas your Octo had more of a personal investment in what was happening and it felt like something was achieved by the end. Not to mention Pearl and Marina's involvement when you're fighting against the statue trying to save the world.

The references and callbacks felt better done, as opposed to Splatoon 2's callbacks which in typical Nintendo fashion were basically just parts of the first game repeated again. Agent 3 appearing and the boss fight against her/him for example felt a lot more unique whilst still just being a reference rather than "kind of just the main boss from Splatoon 1 again, here's the Inkantation again".

And most importantly, Pearl screaming into the wailer as the final chorus drops in 'Ebb & Flow'. I just liked that.

I'm glad their focus was on "fun game" rather than the story.
