I was shocked when I upgraded to both the PS5 and Switch that there are no themes (I've never had an Xbox, so I don't know if they ditched them as well). It seems like easy money and an established precedent, but apparently not. Very anti-fun.
Yeah, the lack of customization options + the fact that I've leaned more towards PC gaming in the last couple years have turned me off from the Switch a lot. I didn't turn it on again until just the other day after I'd been offline for weeks!
i also think the actual console itself lacking in so much customization is also a missed opportunity. i was expecting them to come out with more colors and designs for the joycons/dock but we barely got anything. i'm also still wanting a white version as well because a white console would go so hard with pastel joycons i can only dream.
I also agree that we did get spoiled by the 3ds I miss the themes, music, and the icon configurations
The switch is definitely barebones in terms of customization but definitely have enjoyed the catalog of games!! I also don’t use my switch for anything other than gaming (e.g no YouTube) so it’s been practical
Hoping the next gen brings back the customizations tho even ps5 started implementing something
It is boring...there are no awesome themes like the Nintendo 3DS systems had, there's no background music, and so many problems with the controller occur, so you'd have to get a pro-controller to avoid dealing with the controls slipping.
I don't even use the Nintendo Switch anymore, I only touched the system for Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Miitopia.
At least there is decent profile customization present.
I don't think it's boring per se, but it definitely has less personality than previous Nintendo consoles. It feels almost like it's trying to be more "grown up" than its predecessors and appeal to adults more. Like they're taking cues from the other big consoles with style/design. I feel like people's perception of video games is changing from something only kids did to more of an adult hobby. Of course kids still play games and games for kids come out but IMO when I think of "something to please gamers" or "gamers tend to favor (whatever)" I don't picture a bunch of 10-14 year olds. I think this trend will continue with Nintendo consoles going forward, but I can't decide if I like that or not.
Having customisation options for the Switch UI has never really crossed my mind, though maybe that's because I never had a 3DS or similar console? I do have a PS4, but I never considered putting a theme on it. I sort of like that the Switch layout is clean, but then again, maybe I just don't know what I've missed out on!
I appreciate the Switch user icon options. I like those a lot, and I enjoy that they release new ones when new games are released. I also enjoyed the release of more Switch Joy-Con colours, since I do like the colour combinations they came out with!
I don’t find it boring, joy cons and docks can always be made more interesting with skins, cases, stickers - but I think it can’t compare to say the 3DS. I loved the UI customisation of the 3DS, and overall miss touch screen interaction. The switch is also way too big and clonky for me in handheld
Agreed. It's jarring to go to the home screen from amazing vibrant experiences to the characterless GUIs with no music. Even if they didn't want to bring back themes (don't see why they wouldn't, easy money), couldn't there be SOME personality?
it lacks. i'm convinced this is another reason why i tend to forget i even have it. it's just so...bland? would like to hope that the switch 2 will be better.
Agree with everyone else. With Switch it seems they wanted to try getting away from the "kid-oriented/gimick" image and appeal more to serious gamers. I'm not sure with its success what that will mean for Switch 2, but I'm hoping for it to be custimizable like the 3DS.
The UI is definitely bland. It has dark and light mode at least but that's like, the bare minimum these days. I wish it had themes like the 3DS. That said though, each theme would probably only lag the system further lololol.
The joycon colours were a fun touch though! It was nice to pick different colours. However, it'd be nice to not spend $100 CAD on each set...
I absolutely love my Switch but I agree it's lacking in some of the personality the 3DS/Wii had. I really appreciate how snappy it feels, especially compared to the Wii U which felt like it took so long to boot up, but I miss the themes and eShop music. I got my Switch at launch and I remember thinking surely they'd add in some of the UI features of previous consoles in an update, so I'm kinda surprised we've came and went without any of that added
I totally agree actually. The DS had so much more to it with the touch screen etc I honestly feel like the ‘touch screen’ part of the switch is pretty useless. I am hoping to buy a game so I can dock my switch and use my joycons just to see if it reminds me of a Wii? Because I also loved the nintendo Wii I just don’t get a lot of enjoyment out of my switch.
it’s so BORING in my opinion, maybe it’s because i grew up with the 3DS but i miss the goofy little apps like the street pass plaza and the customization that it had even though themes came out much later in its life span. the switch’s UI is extremely bland imo and it had so much potential to have customization. i didn’t enjoy the switch as much as i enjoyed the 3DS, i still prefer to play with the 3DS.
