I mean, it's just picture under your name and icon, right?
Correct me if I'm wrong. >.> I often am.
????????
But, why do people fliplity freak about it?

Supposedly they're "rare" and a lot of people like to hoard them. I honestly can't explain what the big hype is, maybe they look pretty or something. We have a lot of pixel collectors, as you can see. uwu

People just like collecting things, I guess.

Why do you want Flurry, Graham, Apple, Lolly, Rosie, Maple, Marshal, Gala, Greta, Ruby, Patty, and Ankha? They're just pixels. Correct me if I'm wrong?

I didn't even know there was a big hype on them. I got mine because one is my birth stone, the pear was my first main towns fruit, got the white cake because it's self-explanatory and the chocolate cake was a gift :D

It attracts the same exact demographic that Animal Crossing attracts: collectors.

A friend actually works as a game developer. There are many personality types that they are aiming for when a game is developed. For example, Call of Duty attracts "killers". Games like Animal Crossing attracts two segments, "collectors" and "achievers". Haven't you noticed that everyone on this board is obsessed with completion? It's not enough to have just 1 princess furniture, gotta have the whole set. It's not enough to have one dreamie, gotta have a village full of them.

Collectibles very cleverly taps into that instinct. TBT bells rewards those who post often, so it encourages you to be active here, and that in turn is rewarded with pretty pics for your profile. Notice that the collectibles are often also in a series, birthstones, cakes, fruits, japanese letters.

By the way, this is in no way criticism. I think it's genius, and I like collecting them too! Just trying to explain what I see going on here.

Its like Bg MMORPGs or tf2, virtual stuff that looks cool but isnt really worth anything or useful

Personally, I enjoy having something that makes me stand out a bit. That could be because I'm narcissistic to some extent, but whatever! :D
