Why are similar villagers on such different levels of popularity?

Before I joined TBT I didn't even know tiers were a thing. I've become attached to my current villagers. I believe they're all in lower tiers. However, I am attached to them because of their personality. Apple sent me a letter simply to tell me how much she likes me. Flibert is a sweetie and I adore him. Opal and Blanche keep things interesting (and on point). Mott is insanely loveable and calls me "muscles". Rooney and Chow, despite being grumpy, are really good friends with my character and always offer sage advice. Flo is calm and cool. Kidd is my dancing buddy. Celia is the only sane one. Perhaps I'll let them move one day. But for now, they are a large part of what makes my town, my town.

That's a great reply, thank you. :) I also never knew about the Tiers, but it's useful for my cycling town, it let's me know if my posts will be ignored or not & how long to keep trying.

I think it's a mixture of looks, personality, and fame. For example, Rod would be equal popularity with Samson and Moose, but Rod was in Zackscott's playthrough. Lolly was always popular, but a YouTuber having her probably made her popularity overload. Apollo always was popular, and on top of that he was in the film, which brought him up. And, he was in a playthrough, which also brought him way up!

Sometimes personality has something to do with it. If Rudy, say, wasn't jock he would be way more popular! Also, there are so many peppy villagers, which are also hated. Apple may not be a good example, but I'm sure some would be more popular if not for their personality.

Also, looks. Freya and Whitney may technically be the same, but Whitney just looks more "attractive", which really isn't the word I want to use, because, she's a wolf. Just, well-designed. Rosie and Merry are basically the same, except Rosie is blue, and has big, eyes, and big eyed blue things are adorable, whereas, Merry is just plain white. Also, Astrid and Mathilda are pretty much the exact same, but Astrid has a more interesting design, therefore she's more popular. The only one I don't understand is Tia and Margie, because the basically look the same. Maybe it's Tia's gimmick. I dunno.

I think Bluebear and Poncho really look alike. Their eyes are so the same.
I also feel like Kitty and Olivia are the same kind of ugly. Like, in the same way.
Marcel and Walker have very similar colours - they don't look alike at all though.
Mallary and Maelle sort of have the same kind of eyes and makeup.
Don't Dora and Samson have a very similar face?
I think you can say Gala and Lucy look pretty the same, for a reason.
I'm not going to say Christine and Francine. Because they don't. I find Francine plain ugly and can find a bit of appreciation for Chrissy, because their faces (actually only eyes) are so very different. Yes, everything is the same, but to me it's mostly the eyes that give a certain feel to a villager.

That's all I could find going through the villager list. I have no idea about the tiers, but that matters zero percent to me anyway.

I don't care about tiers xD.
I like all wolves, so Freya and Whitney are on the same level for me.

I've always preferred Freya over Whitney, personally. Her design is more interesting and I love her name. Whitney is so... plain.

My example would be Stitches and Peaches. They're both cute stuffed animals, but one is tier one and the other is tier 5... Peaches deserves more love and recognition.

It honestly probably just has to do with things like popular aesthetic and personality. I can't think of any examples right now, but I'm sure that a white mouse villager with a lazy personality would be more popular than white mouse villager with a jock one. There's also factors like the Animal Crossing movie. It was because of that movie that Rosie became a dreamie of mine, but after having her for a while I realized that the hype from the movie didn't live up to the actual villager, plus Ruby was my preferred Peppy. That's why villagers like Whitney and Apollo are popular - they have some major appearances in the movie. Though Margie is a main character as well but she recently got all the way down to tier 5...

I mean, Peanut and Filbert have pretty similar designs, with the main differences being their color scheme, gender, personality, and eye design, and I'm pretty sure the latter is down to tier 4 whilst Peanut is a bit higher.

I think it's really cool that you like Ruby. SPACE RABBIT! My favourite Peppy is Tangy, but Ruby is my second choice out of all the peppies. Besides those two I don't really like many peppies.

It's funny how I find Tangy adorable, but Peanut really grinds my gears. I do think the face & tone of voice can attract or irritate. Tangy can say the same thing as Peanut & I think "awwww"
but with Peanut, I just can't stand her.

I liked Peanut at first, but over time e misplaced peppy personality is really grating. They are so self-absorbed and confident that it only works if they live up to their own hype.
And that's subjective, I agree it's all subjective.

It's also a matter of exposure. Not just the movie, but it's sort of a "rich get richer" of popularity. I'm not accusing "people only like such-and-such because they're popular," but there's a lot of villagers. There's probably a lot you don't think about. But the ones people like get a lot of art, and are talked about, and as a result, it's very easy for people to look at them and go "Hey, I like this little fella."

How about the peppy cats Rosie is in tier one I believe while Merry is tier four and tends to be overlooked.

This is one that's always baffled me as well! I do prefer Rosie just by a hair and she fits better with my town theme/name but I never understood how Merry is at such a low tier D: To me she is pretty much just as cute as Rosie and Lolly.

I think it must be the fact Rosie was in the movie and Lolly is named after food. A LOT of food named villagers seem to be popular. I guess the name "Merry" just doesn't stick out as much. :( But then again Felicity is at a higher Tier and I think she looks way worse than Merry.

Sadly it's how the world works... Most people will always gravitate twords the tings they feel look the best and are the most popular. By comparison, you could see that a lot of cute villagers fall under the lower tiers because of simple popularity. Why is it that almost every town dubbed 'beautiful' not have all lower tier villagers in it? One word: basic appeal. The majority of Ac'ers want to see the things they are familiar with as a standard.Beautiful towns = landscaped land, nice villagers, organized houses, hybrids, paths, ect. Maybe that's why a lot of people started to repeat that. The majority wants what other people have. And suddenly if you have villagers livng in your town like Violet and Truffles, people are going to judge them as if you have them and don't want them.

Being 100% honest, I don't want to say that I hate all top tier villagers soley on the fact that they are popular. There are a lot that don't appeal to me (Bam, Freya, Fang, Lolly,Lopez, Marshal) and some that I really like (Merengue, Pheobe, Cherry, Kid cat) The difference for me is the experience with them. You can easily look and see which villagers are your favorite based on desgin from a list, but it doesn't = actually having them in your town. When I first started my town, I really hated Hamlet's desgin, I thought he looked sooo basic and plain. But after acutally having him in town, he became one of my favorite villagers of all time. And if I wouldn't of had him in town I would still probably hate him. If more people actually let lower tier villagers in their town and actually interact with them before rejecting the soley on desgin, there might be a few more lower tier villagers becoming widley spread.

Tl;dr People will almost always gravitate twords the things they think look the best and are the most popular with others, but if you actually look into having lower tier villagers before you judge them on appearance alone, them maybe they'll become more liked in the future.

I tried to rectify the exposure problem to an extent in my cycling town.

I had Lionel up for a full 24hrs & other cool villagers that aren't in top tiers & won't go for a lot---because i think they are cool & deserve a proper spiel & people to look at them.

I think these forums here are completely ruled by the popularity tiers. Not saying that everyone uses them as strictly, but I've seen a lot of "ew, why I would I want THAT villager? He/She's a tier 5!" attitudes around here. If you took away those tiers, and people just bought/sold villagers at whatever price the buyer and seller could agree upon, I think a lot more people would be interested in villagers because they actually like them, not because of the value that the tier system here gives them.

Not that I'm insulting the creator of the tier system or anything. I understand it's helpful to the economy around here, these things are just something interesting to think about.

I think it is a mix of personality and looks. But also just personal preference and opinion. To me, I prefer Freya. idk why I just do.
I also don't care much for tiers. I actually tend to prefer lower tier villagers anyway. But I also choose my villagers based on my town theme. I wouldn't want to have Pietro (who I actually don't like) in my town because he is a clown sheep who doesn't fit my forest theme. Also some people just prefer certain species over others. Like I like Rhino's/Hippos/Elephants, and I have seen a lot of people don't.

I'm glad to see this thread spark so much discussion.

There are some on the "high" tiers that I understand why they are so popular after meeting (like BAM---aaaahhh he's soo cute & sweet natured)
but I feel some started off there because they were cute to some people, but once they got put on that pedastool, it increased their value & people like things that are popular.

I agree with the idea regarding prices. I think it would be fairer to everyone to pay for what you value. I don't cycle enough, but I'd be prepared to remodel based on some progressive ideas about villager worth.
Maybe a flat price for everyone would be fairer? If you like them you like them?

That way it would even out---you'd be paying more for Tier 5's, but less for Tier 1-3. There could be a middle ground cycle town? That would also be fairer to the seller who may have spent hours writing up posts, cycling, & messaging people back & forth. They get paid the same even if selling a "lower" tier. That way they would be encouraged not to "auto-void" because people will actually pay them the same for their time.
Hmmm?
I'm not sure, but it's something I think about.

I've always been really shocked about Freya/Whitney. Both are dreamies and I have both in my town, but Freya was much easier/cheaper to get than Whitney which is so strange to me, probably has a lot to do with Whitney being in the official movie though.

I also think Freya's eye colour loses her a lot of points, I've always wished her eyes weren't so yellow...
