if it doesnt switch?
Isnt the main reason why the switch console is called a switch because you can switch from handheld to television.... but with the switch lite it doesnt do anything of the sort.. so why call it a switch.. is it just baby?

Because 💰🤑💸💲 (money + marketing) and for brand continuity/recognition as well, as Tarantella stated.

Well, it's a Lite version and it's still a Switch console. I actually had no idea the Switch name came from that purpose and was like, okay cool name lol.

Well, it certainly IS lighter...also it has the same shape and general layout so naming it something wildly different would be odd.

Because it plays the exact same games and does everything besides "switching"- and plenty of people (I can't be the ONLY one) have ZERO interest in actually switching? Seriously, I had my regular Switch for quite awhile before getting my Lite... I never "switched" once 😛
Even if the name originated from that aspect, it now represents the system as a whole, not just that feature. So if you release a smaller, more convenient to carry version that plays the same games... why make up a new name?

It's named the Switch Lite for the same logic they shouldn't have named the Wii U the Wii U.

The Lite is still a Switch even if it's missing the feature the Switch is named for. This is the Lite version because its light on features, but still a Switch. Just because the namesake doesnt apply doesnt make it ENTIRELY different.

For consumers, this is the most straightforward way to let them know it's the same thing and plays (mostly) the same games.

Remember when they came out with the 2ds that functioned exactly like a 3DS sans the 3D function because almost nobody used it? Nintendo wants to keep their naming conventions similar to family of consoles released so people don't get confused or think it's a totally different product.
Which is funny because both the 2DS and Switch lite don't feature main selling point of their original consoles.

And yet, I recall there still being confusion surrounding the naming scheme in that instance. The New 3DS, for example, had some people thinking it was an entirely new system, rather than just a 3DS with a larger screen and more RAM. And I think some people were genuinely confused about what the 2DS actually was. Some parents, for example, believed it was the previous version of the system, rather than a downgraded version of the 3DS.

Nintendo's naming schemes post-Wii have not been the best thought out, really. It's a miracle they finally managed to have some commonsense with the Switch.

You can hook it up to the tv if you jump through a few hoops but it is possible so it can 'switch'.
