I think it also has to do with loading times. The more there is of a signature, the more that has to load. With that, the more that has to load, the more time it takes as well. I could be wrong about it, but it's what I've been told.
as someone who's on a couple forums without a height limit lemme tell ya it's quite possibly one of the greatest and underappreciated features of this site for this reason alone

lowkey want to make a sig that's just like a 1000000 pixel tall image just to showcase exactly why there's a limit. maybe with the entire bee move script in big font added in too, line breaks and all
so its for loading times / to avoid excessive sizes in sigs / to save people time and patience. i figured it had something to do with all those three but also with some other things like server efficiency or sumn coolio like that

I mean if you have a huuuge picture that's stored on TBT's servers, that's probably going to affect server response time if it has to get loaded every time someone loads a page with that picture in someone's signature. And even if it isn't stored on TBT's servers, people shouldn't have to spend exorbitant amounts of resources just to load one person's signature, regardless of where it's hosted. The height limit primarily serves as a way to prevent signatures from being too obnoxiously large, but it does prevent people from doing extreme things that could slow down servers.
