For example, Nook's Cranny is selling an amp today, but its pink. When I bought it and tried to customize it, it wouldn't let me. Is there just some furniture that you just can't customize yourself? Am I at the mercy at whatever color that Nook's Cranny sells me or can I eventually customize those other items?
I think you can't customise anything they sell unfortunately. They seem to sell the same thing in different colours (clothes are the same). I believe the only things you can customise are the things you craft.
Let's hope in the future Cyrus makes a comeback and he customises the things we can't.
It could be a mechanic just so that people buy Nintendo Online subs so that they have to trade with other islands to get what they want. It sucks but that's how companies are. If you could get everything on your own from your own town, there'd be less need to go to other islands, and in turn, less need for players to buy an NO sub.
It comes in other colours but you will have a 'colour-locked' version, you will always get a pink amp on your island. To get the other colours, you need to trade with people who have the others, for example my colour of amp is black. Once you have the other colours catalogued, you can buy them from your Noom Terminal, though.
They do sell it in different colors. It's not color locked by game. The only things that are color locked are the Nook Miles furniture you can order. Like the Monster Statue and Drink Machine. Regular items from Nook's Cranny, balloons or given by villagers can be obtain in different colors.
It does suck that you can't just outright customize them to the different colors instead of waiting around for a new variation to be for sale.
