Will tanning no longer be a thing?

Non-white people tan too. Unless they?re naturally very dark skinned. I think it could still be a feature. I don?t know though.
But there are people who never tan. Like me. I am paintbucketly white and I never ever get the slightest tint of colour on my skin. It doesn?t make sense to add skin tones to the character customization and include people of all skintones while excluding some people again by letting general tanning stay.

Honestly, I hope not.

I want my character to represent my actual self, and I have light skin in real life, and hardly ever go outside in real life, let alone enough to get a tan.

If people what a different skin tone, then let them just choose it. If they don't, tanning should not be forced upon them.

To my understanding, carrying around a parasol can prevent this. But here's the thing: I am too busy having my hands full with tools to carry a parasol. Plus, it will just take up space in our pockets.

as for dark skin positivity, the best thing for positivity of darker skin tones is simply giving the option of naturally dark tones in game. when only tans are acknowledged, brown skin is seen as temporary, not a constant reality and simple way of being for many people

Of course. I'm not arguing we go backwards and remove skin tones going back to tans only. I don't think it was malice that motivated its absence before; just ignorance as Japan was quite homogenous and insular. I'm just looking back with fondness on a positive aspect of that weird oversight in the game, among my friends I played with. I've seen a lot of negativity around me irl about skin tone and it just made me happy that in my circle, people would 'wake up' (in the game) overjoyed to have darker skin.

And I do think it's relevant still. PC has only 8 shades of skin tone, and if you've ever seen foundation makeup lines you know there's way more shades than that! Plus, people will still need the ability to tan to match their irl skin tone because that changes over time and with sun exposure. I wouldn't want tanning removed because my skin tone changes quite dramatically even with 60 spf - it's just in my genes. The sun brings out my ancestry! I don't feel represented by just choosing one.

I think tanning should be kept in the game, but only if you can craft something that prevents it without being forced to wear an umbrella. I think that would be a good compromise. Tanning is a fun feature, but not everyone wants their character to change appearance because you're playing too much.

I do appreciate the realism, but the game doesn't care about other aspects (red face, heavy breathing, no more stamina, sunburn marks) so I don't really get the point of the tanning feature tbh. They had perfectly fine dark-skinned models throughout multiple games, but you could only access them during the summer and you had to work on them to keep them? Eh... Unless they go all out with realism, I'd rather see it removed personally. Just give us skin color options that can be changed, including spray tan.

I agree, I think it was a (very strange) way to add skin-tones in new leaf, but in happy home designer and pocket camp they simply let us choose, which... is better, I think.

Yeah see this is why I found the posing of the thread's question strange: tanning wasn't put into the game to account for other skin tones. It was in there despite that oversight, just because tanning is a thing. So it's not like they'll remove it now that you can finally choose your skin tone because it was never put in there for that purpose in the first place. It's not made redundant.

And frankly I'd be quite surprised if they remove tanning from a game all about an island getaway with plentiful private beaches.

For those who prefer not to tan, you don’t have to carry an umbrella to prevent tanning, you can also wear a wide brim hat, helmet, or mask to prevent tanning.

I’m sure it’ll still be in the game. If you’re wandering out in the sun for hours you’re gonna get a tan... or sunburn.

Agreed, let’s remember that animal crossing back then was a social simulator born from a Japanese mans loneliness (to sum it up)

Since tanning begins on June 16 and ends on the 15 of September, it really won’t matter unless there is an island like in new leaf with the endless summer or biomes like in HHD (which fun fact the seasons still change on the Main Street or hub of where you work)

It was strange. My friend had to go to the island for hours to tan all 4 of her characters to the darkest skin tone and then had to consistently get them all back to the island to keep them from fading. That sounds exhausting.

It IS exhausting. And I'm not even at the highest level! I just don't even bother much tbh. I had to make do with the pale character lol

CF/Let’s go to the city was the first game to implement it, not new leaf, figure I’d let you know :D

It was actually introduced in Wild World :)

I would like them to keep tanning in. It would be nice to be able to go just a shade or two darker from whatever skintone in the summer. I think it is a fun feature. I remember getting a tan in my very first year and not realizing what it was until it faded.

I guess I like it because I can never really tan in real life. I have two shades. Pale and burned. So, it was nice to be able to actually tan in a game.

Really? ‘*goes back to read it*’ oops, I missed that segment somehow in the tanning section of the Wikipedia....thanks for letting me know :)

I had four characters in my old New Leaf town and it takes 15 minutes to tan each one.

One hour a day, just to tan.

Thank the heavens we can now choose our skin tone.
