Will Tom Nook return?

The biggest question known to man. I'm afraid there's a large chance that our best friend, Tom Nook, might have retired. If this is true, which more likely is, will be a great loss. All of us will be very very upset. I know I will. We all shall remember Tom Nook as not just a regular business man, but as a hero with respect and honor. May he Rest In Peace...

That's what I thought too, like everyone at this point should know that Nook is 100% in the game.

yeah I totally agree, it is so obvious that tom nook is in the game but I like this forum because some people replied nicely

Funny thing that Tom Nook here was the original Animal Crossing mascot, until Isabelle stole his role.

He seemingly got it back in New Horizon it seems.

Sorry OP but the truth is Tom Nook is retiring. His brother Tim Nook will be taking over along the island with his nieces Tammy and Temmy. Tim Nook is nothing like good ol' Tom. You wanna know why knees are fleshed out in the game now? It's so Tim knows where he can bash them in, just in case you fail to pay up on your deserted island tent mortgage. Oops, now your tent is underwater. What's that? You have a ruined tent and no home? Too bad, the raccoon goons will be waiting for your next payment deposit or else. You've been warned.

Not only is Nook not in the game, the first trailer flashed a brief news article that looked kind of like an obituary with Nook's picture on it. Unfortunately, I don't read Japanese, so I wasn't able to decipher what it says. If anyone could provide a translation, I would be very grateful.
