For the next many days, I’m gonna write blog entries on interesting words and their meanings. These are words that aren’t used everyday, but they are words you would like to use in stories. Not all of these blog entries are consecutive entries, but they will be on consecutive days.

The first word of the day is...

Parochial

Definition:

Pronunciation:

pə'rōkēəl

Meaning:

Having a limited or narrow outlook or scope.

Synonyms:

- Local
- Narrow
- Limited

Antonyms:

- Universal

Etymology:

The word came from a latin word parochialis, meaning “related to an ecclesial district”.

What would be considered parochial:

  • You would want to go out to eat, but the only restaurants you can choose from are within your home town (especially if you live in a small town).
  • You only want to play video games within your comfort zone, which consists of only five video games.
  • You only seen ten movies within your lifetime.
What would not be considered parochial:

  • You traveled to every country in Western Europe, as well as Australia, when you’re born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and living in Toronto, Ontario.
  • You watched every movie from the 1980’s in one year, and you plan on watching the 1990’s movies.
  • You have many textbooks in your home library, but none of them are of the same subject.
