It’s time for another word of the day. Yesterday’s word was debacle. Today’s word is:

Passé

Definition:

Pronunciation:

pa’sā

Meaning:

No longer fashionable; out of style

Synonyms:

- Old-fashioned

Antonyms:

- Trendy

Etymology:

The word is a French word that means “gone by”.

What counts as passé:

  • A genre (such as aliens, zombies, and superhoes) was once popular, but no longer popular after its heyday.
  • Low demand clothes that were high in demand before.
  • A cancelled or ended TV show that was no longer popular after ending or cancellation.
What doesn’t count as passé:

  • A currently unpopular trend that was never popular to begin with.
  • A popular franchise that remains to be popular for many generations.
  • A once unpopular book series that became more popular - this example is the exact opposite of passé.
