The letter says it all really.

Basically we had a fight at school where a group of friends, who call them selves the 54 because it is the last two digits of their area code, fought with other african americans. She is being called out by us [students] for using racist phrases and for banning hats which has nothing to do with gangs. We yet to identify that there is a Gang at our school.

Basically we joined together on facebook and decided we are all wearing hats on Mondays. I'm going to try to wear a M. Vick jersey (They talked about that being part of gangs)

This also brought up a discussion with a friend who said her middle school grade had 3 impregnate girls, girls who tried to set the school on fire (did it the seconded time), and sent bomb threats.

The only upsetting thing about this whole thing is that they are trying to stop gangs by blaming inanimate objects and banning them. They decide to look over the heads of people and glare at the hat.

Dear Churchill Students and Parents,

Yesterday there was a multi-faceted fight that took place in the bus loop in front of our Bulldog entrance on Gainsborough Road. Problems which began in the community were brought into our school. The students moved from the cafeteria area to the front of the building with the intent to fight. Three students were charged with second degree assault on other students within the same group. A fourth student was charged with second degree assault on one of our Security Staff members. He was kicked, his glasses broken and he has cuts and scrapes on his face and arms. We are thankful that he was not injured to any greater degree. No weapons were involved in this incident. The students have been suspended for ten days with a recommendation for expulsion.

The problems and behaviors of this small group of students surfaced in early November. Numerous individual conferences with the students and their parents have occurred in the past two months, often before and after suspensions for intimidating behaviors, abusive language and fighting. These behaviors were directed at other students, staff members and members of the Montgomery County Police Department. Similar assaults and threats have continued in various parts of our community.

On November 14, 2006, I required the identified students and their parents to attend a mediation meeting conducted by four members of the Montgomery County Police Department. The lead officer was an Inspector with the Gang Unit. Parents were made aware that the behaviors exhibited, intimidation, group retaliation, wearing of certain colors, and lack of respect for any authority aligned with police knowledge of gang development and recent increased activity across the County. On December 4, 2006, the same panel of officers presented gang related information to the Churchill staff to make them aware of these increased activities in the community and in our school.

A small group of students have changed our educational climate. The many behavioral interventions I

Jeez...its a shame that this kind of stuff happens in what originally was only built to teach students to become something in life...

-_-

"Wow" is right.

Haha, big cities and they're brutal gang fights... none o that stuff in my town.

We aren't in a big city

:)

Ahhh the many problems with society.

I feel bad that so many feel the need to resort to fist fights and stuff.

Well, wow... just, wow... Banning hats and things... That's like saying to not breathe during school hours.... (I'm exaggerating, of course.) Well, don't feel bad about the no hat freedom, I'm in a city and school where we have to wear a uniform! I can't believe what schools are doing to us nowadays! Some of these rules, for this purpose brought up here, some of them just keep people from making fun of each other... I mean, I understand that they want to stop all of that, but there is another way to do it besides taking away our privilege to wear whatever we want. I mean, really. Does anyone agree with me on this?

We've had a no hat, and no jeresy policy at our school district for forever, I don't see this being such a fuss over.

So some kids fight, and they ban hats? That's a good example of misunderstanding between generations. Until your administrators realize that not only are these kids not going down the right path, but themselves as well, nothing that productive will happen.

It is a shame that the adminstration of your school is trying to combat this by banning something as simple as hats. I doubt if that will do anything...

"Principal, the children are fighting!"

"...dear lord, there is only one thing we can do now"

"ban hats?"

"exactly"

My school banned hats, and certain clothing as well. And it's because of the gang thing, too. I guess one person in the district was wearing a shirt with a gang logo on it, when they weren't gangish, and when they were walking home, some guy shot at him. o_O
