Nothing is fishy.
What happened was the person working at the store gave his friend a copy of the game early. Nobody would have known any better, but the guy who got it early decided to publicly release pictures and videos of the game. People eventually tracked down where he lived and where he got the game from.
Nintendo flew a rep down to the store to make sure the guy wasn't giving out anymore copies. The guy who got the game early took his game back, willingly, so his friend wouldn't lose his job.
As for the other stores that released early, nobody has been stupid enough to say where they were. So nobody else has gotten in trouble.
