10 villager max confirmed by dataminer

The island isn't much bigger than New Leaf's town. Only an extra 6 acres (NL; 30 / NH; 36).

Plus New Leaf had a shopping district. New Horizons will have all shops in the actual town space. The island definitely isn't much bigger (or having much more freespace) than New Leaf, so 10 is a good number.

I'm disappointed by this, though not particularly surprised. I've felt like towns have seemed too small and too empty villager-wise ever since Wild World (I really liked having 15 villagers on GCN), and without the ability to create a second town on my Switch, this also restricts the number of villagers I'll get to have in my town, especially if I want a balance of more permanent villagers and rotating ones. Twelve would have been a better number; if not that, it would at least have been nice to have more villagers if you don't have as many human players. I can't imagine myself using eight human players (I've actually never used more than a single slot per town, opting to make a new town rather than add more players), and I'm worried that things will seem empty. I have a region of my current ACNL town that tends to be very poorly trafficked because no one lives there, and while it could be nice to build things in an area like that, it does feel somewhat lonely.

The other issue with a limit of ten is that I have a hard time justifying more than two villagers of one personality type at most. Since I have a bunch of lazy villagers that I like, I end up running into issues.

I wonder what it is about ten villagers that the AC creators like so much? We've hovered around that number for multiple games now, and although I think a lot of people keep hoping for more villagers (or options of how many villagers to include), it's been fairly static for years now.

"There's no free space to invite this character" Hmm... does this mean like if you have a camper and youre maxed out on villagers? Or are they removing what we had in NL and were able to kick out a villager if we had 10 villagers and we scanned one in? ;(

I honestly think it could have less do to with space on the map and system capacity, and more with them trying to keep the repeated dialogue to a minimum. Basically, since they decided not to add any new personalities, they didn’t want to add to the number of duplicate personalities per Island. Of course we can (hopefully?) have whatever distribution of personalities we want eventually, but the game definitely tries to push for a balance.

At this point I just want to be able to get the game on time, my will to care about the villager count is gone. Hopefully they've got plenty of personality!

Literally bullcrap, but what can you do. I mean if the Gamecube can handle 15, so can Switch. Having only 10 makes me not want to rotate villagers and try out new ones.

i’m kinda disappointed but i did plan for 10, so i guess it’s not that big of a deal

Is it possible for this number to be upped for later? Like in an update? Or is it hard coded to not change...

i am super okay with 10 villagers!!!! will give me a lot more room to build them unique backyards and other outdoor things!

that's what i'm most content with as well. even though i would have liked the villager amount to be upped a bit i'll have more room to decorate my island which is the most important thing for me

New Leaf had a pattern storage system. So alts for pattern storage wasn't needed.

That was kind of the whole point of the alts BECAUSE of the pattern storage system... Many people found that the 10 spaces were hardly adequate. Hence the creation of 3 additional characters just to store their 30 extra patterns...

I see. I've just never actually made enough patterns myself.

As far as alts go, I generally make them just as a means to have another character/persona to play around town with, and also have a second house. I'll probably do the same in New Horizons.

Yeah, I didn't really bother with it too much myself! Honestly I think the biggest reason that people got filled up so quickly with patterns was because of how prominent the path patterns were. A lot of them had like 6 different parts for different sides/corners and so it'd fill up the spaces pretty quickly. I'm sure some people will still do this in the new game, but since they gave the ability to have patterns and gave some pretty cool options as well I don't think this'll be that prominent again.

And agh, the limit. I kind of suspected it after hearing the recent speculation but it's still kind of disappointing -- I got too confident in the earlier estimates and started assuming that I could have ALL of my faves, which is more than 10! 12 would have been perfect. I want to have the ten I love the most but I also wanted some of the newer ones, like Audie.

I think it's kind of weird the way that this information appears in the datamine. I guess this is the message that pops up when you try to invite more than your limit then?
