192 RPG Cliches

Yeah, Most are true that I've see. I'm glad someone finally compiled these into a list.

That's awesome! Rule 11 is the best:

Let's Start From The Very Beginning (Yuna Rule)
Whenever there is a sequel to an RPG that features the same main character as the previous game, that character will always start with beginner skills. Everything that they learned in the previous game will be gone, as will all their ultra-powerful weapons and equipment.

Those are scary because they are true =O

Garrett's Principle
Let's not mince words: you're a thief. You can walk into just about anybody's house like the door wasn't even locked. You just barge right in and start looking for stuff. Anything you can find that's not nailed down is yours to keep. You will often walk into perfect strangers' houses, lift their precious artifacts, and then chat with them like you were old neighbors as you head back out with their family heirlooms under your arm. Unfortunately, this never works in stores.

Oh, and everyone look at number 20  It's awesome and true.

Some funny stuff in there, but I have not encountered the majority of them in the RPGs I play, specifically the more relatively obscure ones. The underrated Square-Enix RPGs, Fire Emblem, and more typically don't have a lot of these cliches. Final Fantasy has to be the series with the most, though.

Final Fantasy, true, Bul, but what about some Nintendo RPGs? Superstar Saga has a lot of them, as well as Zelda.

Those aren't the ones I typically enjoy, though... And Zelda is not an RPG.

Fire Emblem, though it has some cliches, is relatively original, and as I said, some of Square-Enix's more obscure RPGs are devoid of cliches as well.

chrono trigger follows them pretty well, Crono even got a rule himself.

Zelda actually does follow quite a few of these rules.

Final fantasy , definitely.

I think it will be my goal in life to make an RPG that follows every single one of these rules. It will be hard, but I might even be able to fit in all the either ors too ;p

I really like how if you sell something to a shop they immediately sell it no matter what it is and there is no way to get it back. #24

Zelda is an Action/Adventure, it is not an RPG. Please get your facts straight.

I honestly won't waste time arguing with you, all I know is that RPG gamers do not consider Zelda an RPG. That's not because it doesn't have turn-by-turn gameplay... It's because there is virtually no direct character development (honestly, getting more Heart Containers) doesn't count. So basically, an RPG has to have leveling-up.

The Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説, Zeruda no Densetsu?) is a fantasy/science fiction video game series created by Nintendo, produced by the celebrated game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. The gameplay consists of a mixture of action, adventure, role-playing, and puzzle-solving, and occasional platforming elements.
Wiki never lies. :0

You're kidding about that last part, right? Wikipedia could just be the most unreliable source for information.

And it says it MIXES these genres, and if truth be told, yes, there are some RPG elements in Zelda, but not enough to make it qualify as an RPG.

I'm an RPG gamer, Zelda's an RPG/Adventure. Wiki says action, but there are more RPG elements to me.

I meant hard-core RPG gamers. Quite honestly... Zelda is not considered an RPG. :\

ZELDA IS NOT AN RPG

And RPG contains world exploration, character development, usually a party of characters, usually weapon and spell upgrades.

Zelda is an adventure game. Not an RPG.
