It really depends on what weapon you like using and have the most success and fun with.
I use the Hero Shot Replica, which you get after beating every level with the Hero Shot in Octo Canyon. It's pretty much a different skin for the Splattershot (unlocked at level 4). I like it because you can really get up close and catch people off guard with burst bombs and super jump to other teammates and use the splashdown if they're in a pickle and you have it ready to surprise the other team. Dualies are another good option for a shooter if you want to dodge roll. You unlock dualies starting at level 4.

Other options for up-close combat would be tri-sloshers (lvl 15), regular sloshers (lvl 8), clash blasters (lvl 30) and luna blasters (lvl 19), undercover brella (lvl 13), brushes (starting at lvl 5), and carbon rollers (lvl 7).

If you like to be in the middle of everything (these players typically try to accomplish the main goal of the game mode you are playing), then rollers are the best option. You can use pretty much any weapon for this to be honest. (as long as you aren't using chargers or splatlings- unless it's a bamboozler, goo tuber, or squiffer. Mini splatlings are good too)

If you like staying back, splatting people further away, then chargers or splatlings are the way to go. They do require some amount of good aim, and I find them a bit harder to use (especially splatlings), and if you use them correctly, it's a huge benefit for you and your teammates. You unlock the first charger at Level 3 or 4 (I don't remember) and your first splatling at level 8. Other chargers and splatlings are unlocked when you're around level 20-30.
However, if you do want to stay back but not have to worry about the struggles of a charger or splatling, than use the Jet Squelcher. It's pretty much a shooter but a bit slower and has around the same range of a splatling. Exploshers are also great for staying back, but I find them extremely hard to use. If you want to try it out, you unlock it at level 18.

pick whichever weapon you like best and feel most comfortable using! that's what i did (i'm a dualies main, specifically clear dapple dualies).

though i would recommend practicing other weapons. i mained dulaies for so long that i now suck with most other weapons. a great way to do this is to go through story mode with each weapon and also just change your weapon every now and again while regularly playing as well.

with all that i would also like to mention that you don't have to be good at a weapon to use it. you wanna be a charger main? find out which one best suits you and practice. :3

oh a splatoon thread,,,i'm nostalgic ;A; i was like one of the three wii u owners and i picked the first splatoon up immediately when it came out bc i knew it was going to be something special! have a big love for this franchise 🥰

it's been a long, long time since i've played turf war or ranked in splat2 (i guess i'd technically be "retired", as sad as that makes me) but a weapon i've sworn by since my splat1 days is the splat roller! it's such a wonderfully unique weapon for a shooter! i love the flicky and sneaking up on ppl to run them over, its so fun and i've had so many unique splats over my career that made me feel so clever! (then again there was the time during a splatfest where i just ran over two ppl from behind,,,like no sneaking involved, they were focused on trying to splat my brother and i just rolled up from behind and double kill 😂)

i'd also highly recommend the n-zaps, theyre incredibly balanced imo. the '83 is probably my favorite from splat2, i mained the'89 in splat1 tho (sprinkler...) the dualies are always fun, though lack a bit of range...right before i got burnt out of playing i picked up the heavy splatling and the ballpoint splatling, both of which were super fun to play! octobrush is a fave i picked up in splat2 after not giving it much consideration in splat1...i always thought u couldnt cover much ground w it and it was mostly for kills, turns out it can be decent at both!

neo splash o matic has a *fantastic* kit w burst bombs and the suction bomb launcher, incredibly offense based and the weapon itself has decent range and good firing speed (these are the two things i consider most in "ranking" weapons, i'm not sure if this is how the pros do it lol) bloblobber is really fun, i prefer the deco's kit more to the og bloblobber's. when splat2 came out i swore by dualie squelchers and theyre still v good imo, i just always have something else i want to play. my v first weapon i played in splat1 was the aerospray and i really like it still for turf coverage, however its range is very poor and the n-zap series covers turf almost as fast imo

to actually answer ur question, theres no one "best" weapon imo, it all depends on ur playstyle! try all the different kinds and see which one u like the best. except blasters. dont touch those filthy things.

I always seem to play weapons with a high learning curve and not the "best kits"... but Splatoon isn't fun for me unless I play my favourite weapons and they just happen to be difficult 🤣 My favourite for ranked modes is the H-3 Nozzlenose D (unlocked level 14) or the H-3 Cherry (unlocked level 20). They are both very supportive/backline weapons, especially the D, because you have suction bomb and ink armour. The gun itself needs very accurate aiming to splat a direct hit, so you have to have a lot of map awareness and smart positioning to space yourself between your enemies to ensure you'll win a gun fight and not get overwhelmed. I wear a lot of MPU with my D so I can pick off enemies easily (this gun has amazing range and turfing ability) and lots of special charge up so I can give armour to my team mates when we make a push. The Cherry H-3 is also played defensively - it comes with splash wall and bubble blower. Abusing the splash wall and cutting off routes/confusing people with it is my favourite thing to do. It's also good for protection if you're still learning to aim with the H-3 - just make sure you're not standing under it when someone throws a bomb at it because it will explode immediately. Bubble blower is also another great shield when you want to make a push. Both the wall and the bubbles is a good way to get the enemies to move in the direction you want so you have more control over the map. Also NZAP '85 has the same kit as the D and is a lot better/well rounded lol but I don't enjoy using it because it feels too easy? Idk lol.

My favourite weapon of all time is the goo tuber (unlocked at level 22). It's hard to find this weapon's place in ranked modes because there are other "better" chargers that out range it and has far better kits... but it's honestly the most enjoyable weapon to play and the BEST TURFING WEAPON!!! It's seriously so good at turfing hahaha. The goo tuber has a really long hold charge, which makes it easier to swim with your charge and pop out to splat people. You can splat people with a partial charge as well - the charge time for a partial kill is about the same as a squiffer. I don't have much to say about this weapon other than it's fun and I love the design 🤣 It's my highest turfed weapon with over 4mil turfed... it's just... really fun lmao.

Splatlings are also one of my favourite classes to use. Ballpoint splatling is super powerful because of its two ranges and the fact that you can charge continuously so you can play it both offensively and defensively (other splatlings need to cancel their spray before recharging). Hydra is also a powerhouse but you are a huge target for getting flanked if you aren't careful. Nautilus is like the goo tuber of splatlings because of its hold charge ability, so it's another fun weapon to play. The heavy splatling is the only weapon I bothered to get the hero reskin version because the chrome looks sooo good. The sprinkler is good for helping get your special ready and bothering people, and stingray is really strong for zone control.

I would say just experiment with a bunch and find what you're interested in. I enjoy being more of a backline/support person rather than getting up in peoples faces. I basically like most weapons that aren't conventional shooters or buckets/sloshing types. I just don't find those fun to play even if they are "good" so it's all up to your preference!

It’s definitely just worth experimenting with all weapon types. Pretty much any weapon can be good depending on the player.

That’s how I found out what weapon type suits me. In the original game I mostly just used the regular Splat Roller at first. But once I started trying out all the different weapon types I came across one weapon that just felt right in my hands and fit my play style. You’ll know what I mean when you start experimenting. Some weapons right away will make you go “ugh I don’t like this”or “hey this isn’t so bad” and hopefully a couple will make you go “wow I actually love this one!”

For me I love short range shooter weapons (even though I often complain about my lack of range lol). I just love fast nimble high fire rate weapons. In order to play them well though you really need to play a careful/sneaky play style. Just jumping into the middle of the fray often results in death. These type of weapons are fast at killing enemies but you have to get in close first which is often tricky since just about everything outranges you. My faves are the Splattershot Jr and Sploosh-O-Matic.

Also don’t be afraid to continue to change things up even after you find the weapon type that’s for you. Even though I love short range weapons I will sometimes switch to the mid range regular Splattershot. Especially in ranked modes. I love having more range to change it up even if I have to adjust my playstyle for it.

But yeah, as I said at the start don’t be afraid to experiment. Every player is different. Just look at dizzy bone and I. Dizzy is amazing with long range weapons. Meanwhile I personally don’t care for them. I played with dizzy during the last Splatfest and our combination of short and long range worked out really well.

Good luck! ^_^

I found this website https://www.splatmeta.ink/xrank that gives statistical usage rates in X Rank and League for each season!
You can sort it by mode and even check out the weapon's viability history.
Of course viability in higher ranks isn't everything, but it's a really neat tool. I'm one who purposely avoids the "good" weapons because I find the weird niche kits, or harder mains to be more fun (heck, I've been on a Tenta Sorella Brella kick lately!). Even though Custom Dualie Squelchers have been dominating the #1 spot in all modes for ages, it's not for everyone. But again, if you ever feel like climbing in ranked, or just want to know what's viable right now, that website is perfect. I hope that helped!! : )
