i usually get an advent calendar later in december because i forget lol but i managed to remember to get one today. just got a regular galaxy chocolate calendar
I haven't had a typical "pop out the windows for chocolates" type advent calendar since I was a young child. I do have one I use though it's different from the typical style. It's a little wooden tree with numbered hooks on it and each day I hang a cute little wooden charm. I bought it as a set several years ago.
I'll update this post with a picture later tonight if I remember.
Unfortunately, I have very minimal memories and experiences of them as a child. So, whenever I see any at the market, my heart jumps for joy and I feel so tempted to get one just for myself! Plus, I've always been a fanatic for Christmas and Christmas-themed anything, especially if it has those classic drawings~ ☺ (Like the art in amemome's comment!)
I love Advent calendars. I love the idea of a small gift every day counting down to Christmas. For years now I have been looking for one that isn't filled with chocolate or toys, because I don't need the calories or more small bits of clutter. I have seen ones focused on haircare/beauty product samples, which sounds kind of cute and potentially useful. And I like the idea of the tea ones others mentioned!
A few years ago I got really ambitious and I decided that I would do one with my boyfriend. We split odd/even numbers and I decided all the ones I would give him had to be handmade gifts. It was a LOT Of work, but I actually came away from that with some really cool creations. My favorite item was based on a matchbox. Inspired by the circus sideshow culture of the early 1900s, it was a little gag toy called a "Pocket Freakshow" that opened to reveal a warped mirror reflection of the viewer.
Here's a pic of it for those who are curious!
As much as I enjoyed it, I don't think I will be doing handcrafted advent gifts again! Too much work.
I don't really celebrate the religious aspect of the season..but I won't lie that I love advent calendars simply for the countdown to the break/end of the year.
I normally get one each year but I did forget this year. Seeing your Lindor one tho....think I'm off to go find one and just catch up.
We do advent calendars every year with chocolate and they're so much fun! When I was little, it was always such a fun tradition to anxiously look in mine for the day to see what chocolate I got that day.
My brother and I received one each year during grade school! They had a simple Christmas scene and had the same chocolate milk squares for each day (although each chocolate had a different stamp like a stocking, candy cane, etc.). The fun part was actually finding the right box for the day.
I didn't get one for myself this year, but I like the ones that have varied chocolates or non-candy items like travel lotions or bath bombs.
When I was a kid, our advent calendar was a handmade felt tree that hung on the wall. We placed handmade "ornaments" on the tree rather than actually receiving a little candy gift each night. It worked for our family. The concept of an advent calendar having actual candy or gifts in it never crossed my mind until I went to a friends house one year and THEY had one. I thought ours was cooler though.
This year, my BF and I have an advent calendar that his mom gifted us. It's pretty cute & the little gifts everyday are just pieces of chocolate.
My family never did advent calendars (wasn't a cultural thing for us) but I do remember having once a toy advent calendar where you had a santa or elf with velcro on the back and just stuck it to a cloth for each day. Not as exciting as the chocolate ones. But now that I know about them, I'd love to have a tradition of chocolate advent calendars.
I loved chocolate advent calendars as a kid. A few years ago, I treated myself to a nail polish advent calendar from Ciate. The Lindor and David's Tea one look good as well.
Although as an adult, I've discovered different ones :') wine & beer advent calenders, cheese advent calenders, pet treat advent calendar, sock advent calenders etc etc
I just received a cat sock advent calendar actually I can start on the 10th :') I looovvveee it
Damn. I’ve been missing out. I don’t remember my parents ever doing something like this, despite them being religious and stuff.
I want to make one for my niece and nephew next year.
I decided to get a cheese advent calendar this year because why not lol
today it had aged cheddar, and I'm a fan of sharp cheeses, so it was pretty good =w=
when I was a kid, my siblings and I had an advent calendar that played music every day and we took turns doing them.
I don't have any Advent calendars anymore, but I loved getting them so much. They were always so fun to open and I used to try to sneak some and would get caught lol.
