Animal Crossing Veterans - what is new horizons missing?

It's been mentioned here already, but honestly... the lack of NPC holidays. One of my favorite things to do in New Leaf was encounter an NPC I've never encountered before during a holiday, or participate in a holiday's festivities when I didn't even know about it. That gave me so much excitement and fun when I was younger. With NH it just isn't the same... and not as charming imo.

Fruit and flower baskets. I want to be able to collect fruits and flowers and display them in baskets. They looked very cute.

Also the dream suite. I want it to be an actual suite. I dont have a bed in my main characters house, and every tine I go an dream, I forget that i dont have a bed. I have to go find one from storage and place it. The option to dream anywhere would be a nice alternative option as well. Why cant my main character dream outside? Or on my second characters house that has a bed?

I miss Pete delivering my mail, and the post office. They could have kept the dodo birds and had a next door office for Pete, Phyllis and Pelly.

There's many things I could talk about, but two things come to mind. First, all the classic themes and sets. I liked the regal series, astro series, rococo series. Second, I wish we had the NL style mannequins. This is perhaps the most disappointing since they are in the game in the Able Sisters store in NH and function the same as in NL in that they display clothes. I wish they were available to the player to dress and display anywhere.

Echoing everything mentioned in the OP, I'd like to add mini games. There's nothing to do with my friends when we play together online. I miss Kap'n's island from New Leaf.

I feel like everyone pretty much hit all the points I would say already. Villagers do sort of feel more like decorations in this game, my friend pointed out that in Pocket Camp they actually interact with furniture (like would ride the merry go round and take food off stands and stuff like that??). Also, this relates to the lack of minigames, but I miss playing hide and seek with them, the find the hidden item just doesn't have the same appeal (and is already so weirdly rare to get? I don't think a villager invited me to play that more than 5 times,).

Also, missing all the old furniture. They brought back the Mario stuff so why was the rest of the Nintendo items scrapped? :(

Completely agree about this island feeling less like a community too, I was personally pretty bummed to find out Brewster's was going to be a part of the museum and not building we can place anywhere. And then all the little market shops are on Harv's island not. I think a really neat feature would be like the second story Museum in NL and have the ability to buy empty buildings/houses we can place anywhere and decorate however (bonus points to have more use out of wall and ceiling items). Okay, fine, the DLC has that but it's still not on OUR islands. There have been some super creative 'building' builds but it's just not the same as having an actual building we can walk into.

Edit: Oh! Thought of another one! The fact the game forces how our house is built! I miss being able to choose what room I wanted to add when and also be able to choose their size. It kind of just stifled creativity to force the three main floor rooms first before we can get the upstairs and basement. Like what if we wanted a house that was just the main floor and upstairs??

i have a list of things,

i am endlessly disappointed that nooks cranny only has one (singular) upgrade, and the name doesnt even change, you are forever stuck with a small furniture selection compared to t&t emporium/nookingtons. there is also no sense of accomplishment from it, like the grind of spending lots of bells and passing the gracie fashion checks.

missing tons and TONS of previous furniture, there was so many iconic furniture series from the previous games, (exotic, kiddie, modern, lovely, etc) and some only got to see the light of day in new leaf. of course, there are decent replacements but they really dont feel the same to the ones in the older games.

removal of tons of npcs, i do find it cute that some npcs in NH are based on being family of npcs from the previous entries (daisy mae and joan, flick and nat, cj and chip) but still a lot of iconic npcs were removed entirely like porter, gracie, the pelican trio (i miss them so dearly). and it feels like a lot of them were just a second thought to be added to harveys island, its an improvement but not exactly what i wanted to see.

golden tool unbreakability, this is mostly just a criticism but the fact that ALL golden tools break now is really irritating compared to the old games, personally, it makes me lose (some) of the appeal i had for them because i thought they would be the exception.

This is the first version that doesn't have an in game clock(separate from the system clock). Having an in game clock is much better imo because there are many of us who like to tt and this can mess up other games. This was never an issue before because we changed the time via the in game clock and never needed to touch the system clock. Now our only option is to change the system clock. I barely played cozy grove because i was afraid i would forget to reset the clock before i opened the game(i did do this a time or two but caught it and closed/saved really fast so didnt have a problem) and corrupt my game. Now I play dreamlight valley and tting in that game is a big no no and causes problems. The only good thing is that because ac has been out for so long i'm not really playing it now so tting hasnt been an issue.

The biggest things missing for me are...

-Fruits that were in other games, but aren't in this one. (We had Lychees, Bananas, Persimmons, Lemons, Durians, and Mangoes in New Leaf). So...why did they just remove them for no reason?

-The lack of precious gems. (I personally loved finding these in rocks more than finding gold. I had a collection of them all, which I dedicated a room in the museum to. It was one of my favorite things. I just loved the way they looked.

-A customizable section of museum in general. It was honestly a fun idea, and we could have done a lot with it in New Horizons. Just a missed opportunity, IMO.

-Playable games inside of the game. (The original AC had NES games that could be played within the game). Now...I'm not suggesting that Nintendo give away games for free...I know they want to market Switch Online and make profit in that way. But, they literally made an Animal Crossing expansion that they bundled with the Online service. So...yeah.

-More actual quests and dialogue options. (To this day, I'm not sure why the original Animal Crossing had better questlines than any of the sequels. It hardly makes any sense). - The villager quests used to be the most engaging part of the gameplay. It was one of the things that you could always rely on to fill your time. Truly baffling that it never made a return.

Animal Crossing never had "quests" to begin with, and no, favors don't count. The favors from the original game were hardly any different from the games that came after it. It was still doing mundane things, such as delivering "x" to "y", writing letters, and catching bugs/fish for villagers. Not much different from what we have now, aside from villagers asking (or demanding) you to write letters for them, and being led on wild goose chases just to give/retrieve a real-life, era-specific thing. Those were errands, not "quests", and this isn't an RPG, so "engaging quests" isn't even a necessity for this series.

Regardless, I still wish we could ask villagers about favors, rather than them just being given to us randomly.

Well...okay. I guess my wording was offensive in some way?

I miss the errands. They were repetitive, but always paid off in the form of an item...so it felt a bit like gambling for items that you needed. In any case, I enjoyed doing it...and I wish it was still a thing. With the exception of Wisp giving you an item for finding his 5 pieces, we are lacking anything similar in New Horizons.

It wasn't. I was just a bit bewildered because it's take I've haven't notice before.

Also, the errands/favors are still there. They never disappeared and are still very much "a thing" in New Horizons that villagers can request the player to do. Rewards are just about the same, but in the form of DIY recipes.

Two main things (for me anyway):

- More furniture (I want my polka dot furniture series back!!!)
- Multiplayer mini-games (Tortimer Island)

NH could really use more stuff when it comes to multiplayer.
It's crazy for a game that is so dedicated to designing to be so restrictive with it at the same time.

Multiplayer for sure. They pushed for an online agenda and didn't bother with a real multiplayer. And being able to choose what sized room you wanted.

I really didn't like how rigid the tutorial was. In the other games, you could go about the way the town developed in whichever way you wanted. But in NH's week long tutorial, the steps were laid in place and had to be done in that way and only that way.

Two of the main things I think New Horizons is missing is...

Well 1 of them is a main feature to the game the other thing is just me being petty.

I feel like there is so much more that can be added to the online part for New Horizons I feel like you can not do much/ nothing really at all with your friends online. I use to always play with my friends online for hours in New Leaf and was never bored but I feel like there is nothing to do in New Horizons.

The second thing is I just really really want items like pocket camps items all the furniture they have is so cool and the fashion especially the dresses on pocket camp is better than New Horizons.

I miss the older furniture, fruit, and flowers a lot tbh.
I also definitely feel like the charm isn't there and/or is just half baked. The villagers are all too nice and just instantly love you without you doing anything. It feels too artificial, like they're robots, and it makes talking to them not fun. There's not enough different dialogue either. WW had the best dialogue imo and I played that game lots. I had lots of peppys and normals back then and it didn't feel repetitive. In NH I have two peppys and it feels like I've already exhausted them. It just sucks. I'm trying to enjoy the community aspect of NH but it just isn't there. I decorate my town and that's it. I don't really live in it like we used to in older games.

I think what the game is missing are interesting villagers, with real dialogue like we've seen in previous games in the franchise. I mean, that was my favorite thing before, in New Leaf or Wild World. I talked to my villagers all the time. Here, the dialogues have been watered down and the characters lack personality.

Then the events seem repetitive and not fun. It's always the same thing. Special mention to Carnival which is a total flop for me. Talking to that damned Roberto twenty times and listening to dialogue worthy of our dear Orville is not great.

As others have mentioned, I would have preferred one or two more upgrades from Nook's Cranny. It's not dramatic in itself, but another design would have been nice and more items to buy! Why not choose the design of the store ourselves like we can for buildings in HHD? (I don't know about HHP).

I admit that I miss the island of New Leaf. The mini-games were really cool and I played them over and over again! Tropical fruits, too. We are on a damn island, where have the bananas, lychees and other iconic fruits gone? Really, I really liked this island all the time in summer. She was small but I had fun!

I wouldn't have said no to a few more villagers. Why not 14? So, you can have two villagers of each personality (or more) and drop the ones you don't like. Well, I admit, it would have been necessary to have an island a quarter larger.

I'll read your reactions, but I think I've said it all. New Horizons is incredible, especially when it comes to decoration! But something is missing, like a soul to the game.
