Any insight on object colors?

Hello. Little bit of an odd question, I tried googling around but can’t find much. Apologies if this has already been asked.

My boyfriend and I both have our own switches/games, and in our games, our furniture items are different colors. A few examples would be he has a green hamster cage, I have a hot pink one. I have a pastel tea cup ride, his is black. My elephant slide is hot pink, his is gray. He has a white spring rider, mine is red. My mr and mrs flamingo are a weird artificial hot pink, his look like the original light pink.. our godzillas are also different colors.

You get it. This has promoted a lot of trading between us

I thought okay, we can customize the colors with the work bench.. but I was wrong.. None of them can be edited.. does anyone have any info or insight on this? Is editing certain stuff something that has to be unlocked, or is this kind of like native town fruit and flowers where it’s all randomly generated and what you get is what you get..

Normally i’d say different colors will appear in the store but so far I have gotten the hamster cage and flamingos twice and each time they are the same pink shade.

I got two different polka-dot mini skirts, a blue and a pink. And now that I have the catalog in the Nook Stop, it does show which different color variations you have (but no idea how to find out what all the available colors are!). I think I got the skirts from balloons, all within my own island. I haven't found different color furniture within my own island yet.
I haven't heard anything from various news sources/early reviews. Based on previous games, I would speculate that there will be something/someone we can unlock later to edit colors, and to put custom designs, on furniture or clothes. I'm really hoping its Cyrus and Reese, because I love those adorable alpacas =D

ETA: Ok, found two different basic teacher's desks from balloons (monotone and standard). Haven't found two different variations of furniture in Timmy&Tommy's yet though, but it's only been a few days.

For instance. I noticed my store only sells specific types of flowers, while my friends have different ones than me.

Im not sure if we need to progress further in the game to unlock everything but so far it looks like every island has certain colors for different items? Or you have to find each item in its various colors ? Idk. It's weird o:

Lots of options for clothing colors when you unlock able sisters. I mainly mean the "public works" projects and some furniture items for some reason.. I am hoping that cyrus and reese come back. If not, what a bizarre move.. Also, the fact some wallpapers have no windows. So weird.

I hope not.. I'm curious to see all the color variants.. that would be a LOT of online trading.. Very tedious, and i'm antisocial lol. I was hoping someone time traveled far enough to shed some light on whether or not there would be a "second tutorial" on customizing or something. I feel you in regards to the light house. Mine's red too.

Ok, this site indicates ability to "paint" things or customize, but it seems to talk about it for DIY items. Not sure about regular furniture yet...

Interesting.. Well.. If I get to a point where they do somehow become available to edit with the DIY kits, I will update. But for now, this is a weird mystery.

I also haven't checked my catalog to see if after trading with him it became a separate option to buy in the catalog, or if you can click to choose a color now, or if it's still only giving me the option to buy the color that is "assigned to my town".. Again, will update later if I make any interesting discoveries.

Update. In the catalog on the bottom left hand side of the screen for certain objects it will have a color or pattern listed like "pink" "white" "natural" "green" "pastel" "red" "blue".

After trading with him I seem to have unlocked the ability to buy the "white" flamingo (the lighter pink) by pressing x where it says "variations." The "natural" flamingo is the hot pink one, the one that appears to be -native- to my town color, the one that appears in my store constantly..

Want to again say, these items are un-editable with the DIY kit. Starting to think Nintendo wants us all to trade for and collect every variation.. Very tedious and i'm hoping I will be able to figure out or unlock a way to edit the colors, but so far, not looking possible..

WOW! What luck you have! I had a villager give me a spring rider after I bought one with my nook miles.. It was the same color as the one I have for sale, red.. BOO. ): I keep hoping different colors will show up for me, but so far flower types and furniture colors seem to never change in my store..

I've gotten two magnetic knife racks from popping balloons, and I was confused when I found that one was red and the other was grey. I'd seen something before the game came out that showed multiple pieces of clothing which looked the same but were in different colours, they were clearly separate items and weren't customised. I didn't think furniture would be getting the same treatment as well, especially since it was confirmed that you were going to be able to customise furniture so we'd be able to choose what colour some items would be anyway. I think it's weird how some items can have different variants but apparently can't be customised.

Yeah I actually don't like that since it kinda oversaturates the catalogue with the exact same items of just different colours. Just let them be customizable D: I don't wanna collect the same item over and over just to have a different colour. I'm hoping customizing will be an option added in one of those updates. I wonder when the next update will be..

Yeah, I noticed some items had a "color" note in the catalogue, implying there were more variants, but when I went to customize I couldn't. At least it seems like the colors aren't island-locked, but rather just random?

I would agree, but so far I have had the hamster cage in my store 3 times, each time it has been pink. The elephant slide twice, both times pink. Flamingo 3 times, has been the hot pink every time. The spring rider in my nooks mile rewards is red, a villager gave me a red one for free.. Maybe I just have really horrible luck here, but i'm thinking it is randomly generated for specific islands and the only way to get other colors is by popping balloons, or trading with other players for different colors.

Regardless if my theory is correct or not, it's still insanely silly that they don't let you edit the colors. It just feels super extra, to make you have to hunt for every variation.. I am thinking reese and cyrus are coming back at this point, im pretty sure.. I hope!

Yeah wallpapers, clothing, shoes, accessories, and flooring is not affected by this it would seem.. Only furniture things..

Interesting detail: the items you get from Gulliver are customizable, even though they are not DIY. The only exception I found so far for this “rule”.

I'm actually happy with that, even if I really want all the colors available immediatly. I like hoarding and cataloging, and I feel like it's an achievement to get all the different colors over time and wondering what colors are available for a specific item (while item database are not a thing yet for NH).
But I must also admit it's kinda sad to not be able to customize a lot of stuff except sheet patterns or DIY stuff... (and Gulliver's item.)
