Any insight on object colors?

Yeah, I noticed some items had a "color" note in the catalogue, implying there were more variants, but when I went to customize I couldn't. At least it seems like the colors aren't island-locked, but rather just random?

The funny thing is that some of the items that don't have a color option ARE customizable. For example, the kimono stand.

I wish there was an easier way to see what non-DIY items were customizable, other than having it in your pockets and clicking on customize.
