Green Star Fragment
I had my first Depop experience a couple months ago and it was miserable. I created my account to buy, not sell. My feet were growing like weeds so I was looking for a new pair of sneakers because that was during the time where everything had just closed. I found a pair of pink Vans selling for a decent price. Mint condition, with pictures, about 20 dollars under the original selling point. I purchased them.
I'd like to make several things clear - it was kind of my fault I got "scammed." First, I was stupid and didn't quite know how to work Depop, so I did not see that the seller had no reviews. I also did not see that they hadn't been active for a bit. (Like 2 weeks). I was just desperate for some sneakers.
At the checkout note, it said that the sneakers could take 5-7 days to ship. Not a problem - I had a lot of free time and nowhere to go. I wait.
7th day rolls around. Didn't ship. I think on either the 8th or 9th day I contact the seller politely asking when they are going to ship. No response. 13th day. My dad tells me I should wait to leave a bad review unless this gets resolved. I wait. Then I finally get my response after I leave a bad review because I'm so tired of waiting.
She's polite as she can be. She asks me why I purchased the shoes when she "didn't have them yet."
WHAT?!
You heard that right. She was selling shoes she "did not have." (Whatever that means.) I'm p*ssed but I respond kindly, asking why she was selling them when she didn't have them yet. Then everything goes absolutely south.
We essentially get into this argument? Conflict? Since Depop was so unreliable to fight, we do it on Instagram. I take a good look at her public account. She looks at least 16, if not older.
During our whole conflict, another person on Depop reaches out to me telling me the EXACT same thing happened to them! She purchased the Vans, but said girl did not ship them! She then proceeds to RE-list them on Depop as if this other girl had not even bought them from her. Eventually she forced her to give her a refund.
Over the course of a few days, we exchange a few terse messages. In the heat of the starting conflict, when we'd been arguing the most, I was literally mind-boggled at how immature she was acting. This girl, who is definitely old enough to drive, is fighting with me, a (then) 13-year-old, like an immature child. I did not cuss her out, nor was I that rude to her. I did, however, make it clear that I was mad. Eventually, after a bunch of "my dad didn't refund you??" messages, I get the refund. Depop forces you to open up a case with PayPal, not Depop themselves. I've also seen multiple pictures online of people finding holes and dirt stains in clothing they've purchased that is listed as "mint" condition, sellers ghosting buyers, and even a picture of a whole chopped-off PONYTAIL a girl found in the pocket of a coat she purchased (of course, all Depop sellers are the same, and, very immaturely, the seller tried to tell the buyer of the coat that the "postman" had probably put the ponytail in her perfectly sealed package. Right.) I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a horrible experience on Depop?

buying secondhand clothing online is always risky business, i haven't done it in a while because i had a few bad experiences on various sites as well, so ive been taking a break from it, for me its usually people listing things in the wrong size (usually larger resellers)

Goodwill has been forced to up their prices because of Depop sellers selling literal KIDS clothes as "trendy y2k shirt, good condition, thrifted!" for $35. I'm sorry... who in their right mind is about to drop 30-40 bucks on a kids shirt that says "I'm a silly monkey!" that originated at Justice?

yeah ive noticed that too, i find that prices at stores like value village (canadian equivalent to goodwill ig) have skyrocketed now that buying secondhand is becoming more and more popular, i literally see things from walmart in there, tags and all selling for full walmart prices lol its nuts

Yeah, be careful when buying from SH/vintage sites unless it has a good reputation and you can contact them well etc. I'm really sorry this happened to you though and yeah I absolutely love those kids selling "trendy festival things" for more than new price sometimes also. -_-

im really sorry that happened to u, stuff like that sucks. ive only bought 1 thing from depop (a volume of manga) and honestly my experience was great. the seller was lovely, and it came on time in good condition. so always make sure u buy from reputable sellers.

Yeah, this too. I don't know how the feedback system works there or if there are some sort of warning stuff, but yeah always check them out and stuff.

personally i've been using it a ton over lockdown and luckily haven't had any horrific experiences personally, my sister ordered a pair of used vans from there and they were definitely more beat up than the picture showed. probably should of realised from the fact they were £10 but.. anyway. it's definitely quite hit or miss

I always check their reviews first before purchasing and so far all the sellers I've bought from have been super sweet and had fast delivery :0 that must have been rly annoying tho im sorry to hear that happened to u :c

Out of curiosity I checked it for some brand items recently. In general people are not descriptive as some other second-hand sites I use, I understand that is on posters but I think the site can benefit from quality option filters (IE: product age, condition, etc). This is more my preference, but I have seen a lot of replicas on there which I would like to avoid as well.

I haven't purchased clothing off there but I've purchased from three sellers who were awesome. Two plushies, four books, and a figure and all were in mint condition/brand new.
Always check reviews on anything you purchase anywhere. That's a good rule of thumb. If something looks too good to be true, it usually is.
Sorry that happened to you though. Getting scammed anywhere is the worst feeling.

I've been selling/buying clothes online for a long time, and I've never really had any problems...but the problems I have had were on Depop. I do like the app, but I think it is used by a lot of younger, inexperienced users. & as others have mentioned, a lot of clothes are not rightfully listed as the dupes they are, and many people list things as "nwot" when the clothes have been thoroughly worn. For some reason, these users often have positive feedback, so it can be hard to tell what you're getting into.

I once purchased a sweater that I had tried on at the brand's store in real life, so I knew what size I needed. I purchased an xs off of Depop, but what I received was a size s. When I confronted the seller, she told me that it "fits like an xs," so that's what she listed it as. What? She did allow me to return the item, which I was thankful for.

When I tried ordering the same sweater again from a different seller who listed it as only being worn once, it arrived extremely stretched out and absolutely reeked of perfume. I tried washing it twice and hanging it outside for 48 hours, but nothing got the smell out. I ended up donating it. Clothes bathed in perfume seems to be a common problem with buying used clothes online, but this was unreal.

I also bought a t-shirt from another seller who immediately asked me to pay outside of the app. She had a lot of positive feedback, so I went with it. After 3 weeks, she still hadn't shipped the item, so I asked paypal to refund me. I don't think she was trying to scam me, but I wasn't willing to wait that long, especially because it was unexpected and she wasn't responsive to messages.

Another bad experience is when I bought a dress from a seller on depop. It arrived covered in all kinds of things, and was smelly and unwashed.

Considering that I've completed a lot more transactions on websites like ebay, mercari, and poshmark, it's kind of wild that all of my bad experiences happened in one place: depop. I have had a few bad buyers on poshmark, though. Someone tried to scam me there.
