Because at least in other games you get a sense of accomplishment, a feeling where you've done something. While it's not necessarily something to brag about, it still gives you that feeling of accomplishment and "picker upper" that people may need.

Please note, the only commercial for Animal Crossing I've seen that involved adults actually only involved females. While not intended to be a sexist comment, yes, it is much more likely that a chick would play the game than a guy.

EDIT: I guess I wasn't clear on what point I was trying to make.

Look, chances are, this game is for kids/your girl. Yes, women are capable of being sexual predators, but it seems to me that the cutesy atmosphere would appeal to them, but my point still stands about how the game is about doing nothing.
