Beirut explosion

Yeah, just read about it on the news and saw the pictures and they look absolutely terrifying. Hope the damages and deaths don't go up too much and my thoughts to everyone there right now and especially those who lost someone or got badly damaged.

And as you wrote, I hope no one here have to suffer because of it.

It may not mean much coming from someone in the states, but I hope everything turns out alright with both the city and its people. May the good people of Beirut stay strong!

pretty crazy, hope there wasn't too many casualties, apparently it was 50 tonnes of confiscated explosives, stored in a major port alongside tankers with ammonium nitrate, no idea why they'd store that kind of stuff in the heart of a city but its terrible what happened

I just saw this. It’s awful. Hope as many people as possible get out unscathed

Terrible tragedy. A lot of lives lost, people that let this happen need to be held responsible including the government for allowing dangerous chemicals to be stored in such close proximity to populous areas since 2014. Clearly, history is not important and taken seriously. The Toulouse chemical factory explosion on 4th of October 2001 is an example of how dangerous ammonium nitrate is, the tragedy then decimated an entire factory, leaving only a crater and two thirds of the city was affected. The only difference between the Toulouse chemical factory explosion and the Beirut warehouse explosion is the cost of lives, with the former taking 29 lives and the later taking 135 lives and still counting as rescue operations continue :(

One can argue that one is a warehouse and the other a factory. Look at the 2015 Tianjin explosions at a container storage station at the Port of Tianjin, although the chemicals that cause the explosions are not the same but it shows the potential of a great tragedy waiting to happen if you store large quantities of dangerous chemicals near populous areas.

For now, let's hope the city of Beirut can recover from this tragedy as well as tackle any outbreak of Covid-19 simultaneously. Let the world learn from this tragedy and not let history repeat itself.

i’ve seen a lot about this and it’s terrible - i genuinely hope that beirut and all the people impacted will be able to recover and heal from this. with how many tragedies there’s been this year, i can only imagine just how much more devastating this must feel for everyone

Not much to say other than what has already been said, but I will say this was terrible and I hope the people there are able to recover in time. v_v

I can't stop thinking about it as a friend of mine is from there and she has a lot of family in the city. She's really struggling to get through things like work etc right now. It's horrible, one of the worst explosions caused by mankind in human history.
