This isn?t about the best and worst Pok?mon, moves, or abilities of each generation. It about what aspects you find the best of each generation (like when Gen 2 introduced Pok?mon breeding) and the worst (like when Gen 1 had very bad glitches). My question is, what did each generation of Pok?mon games did right, and what did each generation of Pok?mon games did wrong?

Through Gen 6:
1: Good: MissingNo. and all the other fun glitches. Bad: It?s heavily outdated by today?s standards.
2: Good: Introduced shiny Pok?mon. Bad: Some of the battles were tedious.
3: Good: The villainous teams. Bad: Too much water.
4: Good: The music. Bad: Battles were so slow.
5: Good: The story. Bad: You couldn?t get any of the older Pok?mon in BW1 until after you finished the game.
6: Good: Wonder trade. Bad: Mega evolutions.

oh let's goooo

1 -
good: can beat the game easily and quickly. personalities and exploration.
bad: glitches! you can run into these babies without any trying.

2 -
good: it included literally everything up until that point! crystal even had animations on the mons. held items! the battle tower was difficult straight off the bat!
bad: some of the things weren't inherently obvious what you were supposed to do. i remember consistently getting to whitney then not knowing what to do for a long time in pokemon gold because i could never find the water.

3 -
good: ivs! new system of shinies! the story even had a kickass climax with the legendaries! the sevii islands!!!
bad: stlil relied on the battery for keeping time, which was interesting. lots of batteries ran dry. berries were also interesting sometimes, with no clear way without dedication on how to maximize individual output.

4 -
good: absolutely the music. that slapped. the overall experience which expanded on the sense of direness that gen iii had at its climax. platinum was amazing. hgss's FOLLOW ME SYSTEM!
bad: the desaturated aesthetic was kinda meh. the games also seemed kind of slow--to the point that people have actually created patches that take off the speed limiters

5 -
good: better 3d engine. the constantly moving pokemon were really cute. story slapped. overall really well done
bad: really the first point at which i feel a lot of us were like "are we getting too many pokemon?"

6 -
good: new areas to explore i guess? the pokemon also got really interesting
bad: it was the first game that i couldn't actually complete in one sitting because i had to put it down and take a break. it just wasn't attention-catching to me? i don't know.

just some thoughts scribbled down that relate to the thread. i never even got around to gen 7 but hope to pick it up as well as 8

This doesn't answer your question, but I loved 4 the most
aesthetically, the pokes it added, the pacing, the region, all of it

I've only played Gen 1, 3, and 4 (also Gen 6 if you count ORAS) but I can say a few things about them.

Gen 1
Good: The soundtrack is classic. My first game was Fire Red (which is technically gen 3) and so I have a fondness for the music from that game.
Bad: The battle mechanics in Red and Blue are straight up broken. I'm not sure about Yellow version. There are a lot of moves that don't work the way they should, and they even messed up type effectiveness, leading to the psychic type being extremely OP in Gen 1.

Gen 3
Good: also has a great, classic soundtrack. Both RSE and FRLG have good music. I also just generally like Hoenn a lot, has a good group of characters, villians, and pokemon.
Bad: I hate how difficult it is to complete the National Dex in these games. It pretty much requires that you have access to all Gen 3 games (including Colosseum and XD) which is frustrating.

Gen 4
Good: I like the Poke Radar used for shiny hunting. It can be a bit frustrating to get to a chain of 40 to have the best odds at finding a shiny, but I've had a lot of luck using it in Pearl. Also, I've never played Platinum but I bet it's a great game.
Bad: The game itself runs sooooo slowly. I play Pearl version and sometimes it's unbearable how slow the game is. Also imho the dex is kinda weak in this game (besides the legends).

Gen 6
Good: SHINY HUNTING IS SO FUN!! I'm a very avid shiny hunter and Omega Ruby is always my go-to for this!
Bad: some of the models colors are butchered in the earlier 3ds games. I believe a lot of these were at least partially fixed in Gen 7, but for example a lot of colors on Pokemon are just washed out or dull. I appreciate that this was fixed in Let's Go.

Generation I:
+I um... don't know. They were the originals, I guess?
+Great OST

-While holding up a lot better than other Gameboy games, these games aged extremely poorly (imagine what could be said about other GB games, then? Don't get me started)
-Lacked ability to play as a girl, even though a girl trainer did exist in artwork.

Generation II:

+Built upon R/B/Y in a beautiful way that was so much fun and nostalgic for me as a kid.
+Crystal finally added the option to play as a girl.
+Fantastic OST
+While not the generation with the most of my favorite Pokemon, it certainly beats other generations in it was pretty solid with the fewest I think are bad.

-Is dated in many of the same ways as Gen I.

Generation III:

+Made many QoL improvements that keep the games from feeling anywhere near as dated as their predecessors.
+Great OST, again.
+Began the trend of remakes.

-Took steps back from G/S/C. Such as the removal of the day/night/time system.
-No continuity from the previous two generations.
-Some bad Pokemon designs, but hey it happens in all generations.

Generation IV:

+Brought back the day/night/time system.
+Snow for the first time (but why in the world do they count it as hail during battle?)

-Extremely forgettable OST.
-Some of the worst designs in all of Pokemon. Most of the cross-gen evolutions were abominable.

(I don't remember Generation IV very well. I played Diamond in 2008, and that was it)

Generation V:
+Hit the reset button much better than Generation III, with making us only use new Pokemon before the post-game. Made things feel very fresh.
+Some of my top favorite Pokemon came from those generation. Not every Pokemon was a winner, but there were a lot of fantastic designs.
+Seeing a non-Japan based region for the first time was neat.

-Mostly forgettable OST again (not as bad as Gen IV, though)

Generation VI:
+Incredible OST, my favorite!
+Kalos is a beautiful region (aside from being watered down by being 2.5D) based on an exciting location and full of variety.
+Pretty strong generation for Pokemon designs.
+3D Pokemon designs are great, much better than the Stadium ones we were plagued with for an eternity.
+Trainer customization became a thing, and is amazing!

-Region still being 2.5D was very disappointing.
-Gen I pandering started creeping on us in these games.
-Extremely short generation that they cut off far too soon.

Generation VII:
+Moved further away from 2.5D, were much more 3D.
+Brought regional variants... even if all of them were Gen I. *sigh*

-Soooo much Gen I pandering. Make it stop!
-Inconsistent difficulty.
-The cutting of the National Dex (not the cutting of Pokemon that happened in Sword/Shield just the cutting of the Dex)
-Some of the worst Pokemon designs ever (especially the Ultra Beasts).
-While being 3D, the games felt even more limited. The lack of a movable camera doesn't help.
-Unexciting region idea, IMO.
-Mostly forgettable OST.
-LGP/E became a thing. That should have never happened.

Generation VIII:

+Regional variants expanded beyond Gen I, even though a lot of Gen I ones still happened.
+Galarian Rapidash! <333
+Neat region concept like Kalos, and felt even more like the land it was based off of than any game previous.
+Wild Area - far from perfect, but a nice effort.
+Zacian and Zamazenta are best legendaries.
+The gym concept is great.

-The big Pokemon cut.
-Forced Exp All
-While Wild Area is a fantastic idea, it's not balanced very well and with the forced Exp All, you are punished for wanting to spend time playing in the Wild Area, as Pokemon quickly become overleveled.
-Story has a great structure, but underdeveloped characters and the plot being sprung on us at the very end of the game sadly messes things up.
-Very minor, but boy do the graphics in Wild Area really suck. Calling the trees OOT trees is no exaggeration at all.
