Other than religion and politics, what do you think is the most controversial subject in general?

I know shipping wars have always existed, but it feels like the social media era has amplified things to the point where people throw criminal accusations over who ships what. It's really exhausting and sours participation in online fandom spaces for me, at least where social media is involved and despite not being invested in many ships, because I don't like how intense people can get over the subject. I think people just need to take a step back sometimes and remember that what they're getting so heated over is, ultimately, people playing pretend.
I agree with this! Your post reminded me of something I witnessed a while ago: there was a person who shipped two characters from a cartoon and both of them were, like 2-3 years old. Then people didn't like that (they thought it was disgusting), and the person got mad, took it a step too far, and assumed they were calling them out for being gross and forcing them to do gross roleplay with the characters. (There's another more specific term I was going to use, but I'm not sure if it's allowed here in the forums.)

TBF, I thought the reason why the people reacted that way was because those characters are too young and innocent to be thinking about relationships and stuff. But either way, I didn't like how both sides reacted. Just leave them alone, let them enjoy their ships. And to this shipper, just. Chill

I believe that the worst of the shipping debates is Kataang vs Zutara. The Pokémon fandom (at least the anime fandom) is also bad about shipping wars (case in point, Ash x Serena).

It's exhausting, isn't it? I think the big problem is that social media shoves a lot of people into close quarters who have very different comfort zones, and so naturally it leads to these kinds of controversies as people run into things that make them uncomfortable, coupled with many participants in these arguments being young and having very strong opinions. Meanwhile, I only really care if someone is actually hurting anyone, even if their preferred ships aren't to my taste. I figure if something bothers me enough, I can just block them and not have to worry anymore. Were people more willing to simply do that, I think people would have a lot more fun online. I know I certainly would.

Another pretty big one we may have missed on was when Cartoon Network picked up and aired live-action shows on their channel (as part of the CN Real block). While everyone can agree that live-action shows do not belong on Cartoon Network (and that some of the shows on CN Real, as well as Out of Jimmy’s Head, were terrible themselves), it did bring a lot of negativity in online discussions, and rarely would you ever find people who liked them.

Discussions about the male gaze are pretty awful, maybe it’s not the most controversial since it’s normalised to most people but it’s miserable when you can never mention it without actual women getting spoken over, and the excuse “oh but the men are all muscled!!”

Anything to do with women really, so also when you don’t want to have kids and you appear feminine, you can get a lot of crap for that and even doctors don’t take it seriously.

And like how many things do women like that get made fun of extra hard lmao. Society wouldn’t have cared about Twilight to that degree at all if it had been catering to teenage boys instead.

Just, realistically that matters a lot more and is a lot more bothersome to me than fandom debates, which are toxic but in the end who ACTUALLY cares. And this is WITHOUT the political side of it involving womans’ rights but purely personal choice and interests. Get my uterus out of existence please, it has only ever been a burden.

I guess you can put LGBT in the same category but idk people have framed it as a political debate so that sucks. But the male gaze or “cringe” hobbies haven’t been attacked like that yet.

@SkyKnight03 That board is slower but it’s not any better post-DLC tbh, a lot of the discussion also shifted to who deserves to be cut next game. The Smash fandom in general is so terrible. I was very active there and I met my partner there tbh.

Actually, it’s not just limited to CN Real. Ever since 2005 when Flash Animation started becoming mainstream, Cartoon Network became a controversial cartoon channel, because popular shows like Ed, Edd, and Eddy and Courage the Cowardly Dog ended too early (or even ended in general) while shows like My Gym Partner’s a Monkey and Squirrel Boy (which did not live up to the standards of the older shows) started airing. Squirrel Boy and Johnny Test especially, since they both had a large vocal hatedom on the internet. So Cartoon Network didn’t just become controversial for airing live action programming. They were controversial for their cartoons too.

Anything about autism.

I know it's a social issue which wouldn't count(?) for this discussion but this is a topic I hold very dear to as I identify as being on the spectrum. That's all I'm going to say here.

Shipping and the state of long-runner franchises, I'd say. I swear, you can't say anything about a ship or game you like without someone barging in to say your ship's either never gonna be canon (who cares if it's canon or not???) or a flimsy excuse for how it's abusive (which 9 times out of 10 is just "uhhh it's hero x villain" or "A was mean to B one time") or how much that game you like SUUUUUUCKS or whatever. Can't people just not like something in peace?

Yeah I don't mind who ships who ect.

Sometimes even the creators of their own work make some of the most questionable relationships/ships. Ben 10 in its later seasons had Ben's official/final relationship be with one of the most toxic and abusive characters. It just felt so out of the left field. She only liked him because he could transform into an alien werewolf species. It kind of felt like an icky fetish.

Or like Naruto's obsession with trying to keep Sasuke as a friend, even though the dude was a terrible friend. Really sends a bad message to younger audience about holding onto toxic relationships.

I don’t like music as much as the average person.

That’s not to say I dislike it in general, it’s just harder for me to find songs that I like. Hell, a lot of the music I do listen to is mostly video games, and Sparta remixes/Sparta remix bases.

And a lot of of the time when a song I do not like is playing, I just feel stressed out and sensory overloaded.
