I’ve just bought Pokemon Pearl ds game which is Gen 4 and I would like to know what you think is the best team to go with in the game if anyone has played it before.

Any team works for Pokemon Pearl, imo! However, Pokemon Pearl has a major fire-type issue, with only Chimchar and Ponyta being available before the Elite 4, so you may want to consider that if you were planning to use a fire-type.

Otherwise, I would recommend using Shinx, as his line is pretty good, imo. (Staraptor is also pretty great, always use him when playing Gen 4!)

If you want pure coverage, the best possible team is:

1. Infernape
2. Staraptor
3. Gyarados
4. Bronzong
5. Garchomp
6. Roserade

I agree Infernape is almost required in Diamond and Pearl due to the pathetic fire options (seriously, fire has never been a common typing but Infernape and Rapidash alone is a major low). On my team when I first played through, I also used a Roserade, Luxray, Gastrodon, Staraptor and Weavile. Really, aside from fire, there are a lot of interesting choices for any type and combo of typings you could want to use.

use whatever you want

you don't "need" a fire type, you can easily make do with a fighting type (gallade, machamp, lucario, medicham)

and a flying type if you're having trouble with grass/bug types (togekiss, staraptor, crobat, honchkrow)

the game has plenty of options

Gastrodon is a great pick if you need a good water type. It can hit hard with surf and ice beam and defend with recover. Also catch a Bidoof if you don't want give your team a bunch of HMs.

If you want to add some spice to your run, try using a Pachirisu as your electric type instead of a Luxray. It has some surprisingly decent stats.

Obviously theyre pretty limited but theres definitely plenty of alternatives and id say theyre far from "required".

Yeah, but the problem is having a Fire-type is incredibly useful. They kinda just tear through half the game with minimal effort.

I know everyone swears by Infernape, but personally I prefer Rapidash since its one off my favourite Pokemon. Torterra was a great starter and I have no regrets.

I'd argue instead of Bronzong and Roserade, Alakazam/Kadabra and Magnezone could be used instead.
Roserade has a weakness to Fire, Ice, Flying and Psychic whereas Magnezone is only weak against Ground. Alakazam/Kadabra is a solid psychic type, balances out the weakness in special attack on the team and outspeeds most Pokemon. Can't argue against the rest because they're solid.

I think it is good to use your favorite pokémon. but I don't recommend you have same type. For example, all your pokémon is Ground type. it is better to bring various type pokémon in your team.

I picked Piplup as a starter as I did in at least one of the OG games since it learns both water, and flying moves. I also suggest going Underground if you want rarer/stronger Pokémons that can carry as well.
