Oh, please don't sweat over it! Whatever you do will be FAR better than what I have, I promise!
I'm thinking a dead flower or two would be GREAT! I didn't ask for flowers, lilylily did, but I agree with her that dead flowers would be a terrific idea. I had been toying with planting some and letting them wilt...but then if you so much as touch them they shatter.
Maybe a stone with a grassy edge, green mixed with some lighter dead-looking green? Does that even make sense? Or you could always make it easier and perhaps have a black-green moss on the edges? Well, if that would be easier, that is. I have no idea how designing works. But the cracks you made in the top stones was genius. PERFECT! Honestly, if you make several I'll use them all. I have mule characters just for patterns. I don't want you to stress over this or work too hard, okay? And it's hard to describe something you can't quite picture yourself. It's like the image is on the tip of my brain but I can't quite get a clear visual. Maybe I can find some pics that may help. Or not. But I'll try.
I hadn't thought about the 3D for gravestones. I am currently using pale grey ones that say "You are missed" but you can barely make out the words. They can be flat if you want. I just want some you can actually read and see that they are gravestones. I just (personally) don't want crosses, Jewish stars, or anything religiously affiliated. R.I.P./You Are Missed/You Were Loved... or if that is too long just a RIP. Or...whatever you think! Heck, even a stone that is either grey, black, or whitish (like the old sandstone ones) with a skull on it would work.
I appreciate, and I'm sure lilylily does, too, the work you are putting into this. So far what you've done is FAR FAR better than anything I've seen anywhere for an old/creepy section. Even the Tumbler Path Blog doesn't have much like that. And I don't go for wood and the brick designs are too "modern" and "new" looking.

Don't know if this would work, but it has longer wisps of old grass for a possible idea...but then again, it may be more than any ACNL could or should do -

Now this one has a dead leaf pattern that could look really good, if it's feasible -

Now this one is interesting in that instead of stones or grass, an old drought revealed old cracked dirt!

This has some rock and grass -

And finally, a cool and maybe (?) simple gravestone pattern???

Hope this isn't overwhelming! They are just for inspiration.
Gah...I hope the links work! I copied and pasted from Google Images and I don't know if they are clickable or will work with a copy-paste-swipe. I hope so.
Oh, I just found an old cobblestone with grass in the cracks -
