Can someone clear up how many friends you can invite to your island. (Not Live)

I hear something different every outlet I go to. 4, 8, 4, 8, 4, 8.

How many people (who do not live on your island) can you invite over to hang out and then when you guys are done chilling, These same individuals go back to their town which is not yours.

Im trying to be clear as possible because I've asked this before and was still misunderstood.

A video I was watching today was saying that you could have up to 8 if you had a Nintendo Online subscription.

So I was wondering as well if that meant you could only have the typical 4 then if you don't choose to buy the sub.

4 for local co-op (which is where 4 player comes from) and up to 8 coming to visit your town at a time

Well, technically you can have 7 visitors. You’d be the 8th player.

Do the four local multiplayer player always have to share one screen or is that just the case if they don’t habe the game themselves? If the first is the case, local multiplayer isn’t even an option for me, although all my AC friends live close by.

You only share a screen if you are playing with someone who has a house in your town (couch co-op). Local multiplayer would be playing with others who have the game, and your Switches are close enough to connect without an internet connection.
