I've seen someone say it was possible, but I've been playing since release and I've never had the option... Lately, a bunch of my villagers have been running up asking if they can call me "pup", which Fang nicknamed me, but I don't want them to because it's just not the same when it's not a canine saying it, haha. But I feel bad always turning them down :( They always say something like "Oh, I guess it's just for your closest friends... that's okay" and I'm like nooo I love you please nickname me

For clarification I'm talking about *nicknames*, not catchphrases. I enter in custom catchphrases for my villagers all the time!

Just from personal experience, I've only been able to enter a custom nickname when someone asks about giving me a new, specific nickname, and then I refuse.

If they ask to use a nickname already in circulation, they just do the, "Oh, I guess I'm not allowed to call you by a nickname. Sorry..." dialogue and don't let you pick a different nickname for some reason.

Yes. When they suggest a nickname, if you say no, it will let you type in whatever nickname you want.

Ahh, I see. So that's what I'm doing wrong. Kind of inconvenient they only let you do it for a new nickname! I guess for some reason I just kinda assumed it'd be the other way around?? I mean I'd feel a liiittle bad to deny their suggestion... Thanks for the answer!

Initially from my experience, if a nickname was being suggested around my island and I refuse, my villagers will keep calling me by my character's name. Over time, I eventually got to choose my own when I refused once again to one of my villagers. Perhaps it may have something to do with friendship levels.

Yeah, I think it's different from NL for some reason! I'm pretty sure in NL, you could change your nickname anytime someone mentions it. I definitely don't remember the, "Oh, sorry, I guess I won't call you by a nickname," dialogue.

I felt so bad when Buck asked to call me by a nickname that Mira gave me, and then I said, "No," thinking that I could come up with a new nickname, and then he ended up all sad. D:

WHAT?

oh my god, I've never turned down a villager's request to nickname me before in any of the games, this is mindblowing!
im literally shaking and shaking. I have 2k hours in new leaf and 400 hours in NH lmao

I got my first nickname after three declines from the same villager. Then it spread and another villager wanted to give me a different nickname, I said yes to the new nickname option but declined her suggestion. Then she allowed me to type it in after only one decline.

I declined my first suggestion and asked them to call me kiddo instead and have had only one other ping to give me a new nickname, which I turned down. (One of the pings was "backbeat.") But they all call me kiddo.

I feel two situations can both happen after you turn down the nicknames they pick: either they will disappointedly say okay and then walk away, or let you type in the nicknames you prefer. I had both happened to me.
